Catherine, famed for her roles in The Beauty of the Day and Repulsion, spoke out at Cannes Film Festival this year about her feelings towards social media.

The star accused a new generation of celebrities for spending too much time projecting their private lives across different online platforms.

Calling the 21st-century celebrity phenomenon a 'pity', she claimed being a star necessarily entails a degree of secrecy, adding it is 'hard' to keep the mystery in a world of Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

She said: 'It's the social networks that don't allow people to dream any more.'
