Batman and Mamma Mia lift movie chain Cineworld

Movie chain Cineworld today shrugged off the consumer downturn and delivered a blockbuster performance.

Film lovers flocking to see Mamma Mia and the latest Batman flick The Dark Knight sent box-office takings soaring 3.9 per cent in the 43 weeks to 23 October, while total revenues were up 2.2 per cent.

Despite the delayed release of the next Harry Potter film, chief executive Steve Wiener expects bumper sales in the run-up to Christmas and James Bond: Quantum of Solace and High School |Musical 3 to pull in the crowds.
