Jack Sock is the latest player to fall victim to the New York heat wave after the American retired from his US Open second round match against Ruben Bemelmans on Thursday.

With temperatures soaring into the early 30s at Flushing Meadows Sock, who won the first two sets against his Belgian opponent, was unable to play as he suffered from the heat and severe cramping.

The 22-year-old lost the third set 6-3 and, a break down in the fourth, needed some attention form the trainer as he struggled to even stand on his feet.

Draped in ice towels and exhausted-looking Sock, who was also forced out of last year's US Open with cramps, was helped to his feet and carried off the court unable to continue.

'Jack Sock was forced to retire from his second-round match vs. Ruben Bemelmans today due to heat illness, complicated by cramping,' a statement read.

Sock added: 'Playing in the US Open is the biggest and most important moment of the season for me, so having to retire from my match today is extremely disappointing.

'I want to thank everyone for their support and can't wait to be back next year. I feel better already and look forward to playing Davis Cup.'

A record 12 players retired from their first round matches at this year's US Open with the humidity proving the biggest problem.
