Services to honour victims of 2002 Bali bombing

Memorial ceremonies will be held across the country today to mark the third anniversary of the Bali bombings, which killed 88 Australians.

The ceremonies in Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane will coincide with a special service in Bali, which Foreign Minister Alexander Downer will attend.

A total of 202 people were killed when bombs tore through Bali's nightclub strip on October 12, 2002.

Prime Minister John Howard said a service would be held at Parliament House to mark the anniversary.

Opposition Leader Kim Beazley will also later join Mr Howard in laying wreathes at the Indonesian Embassy to remember those who died.

Parliament will be delayed for an hour, until 10am AEST, to allow MPs and senators to attend the service.

Also attending the ceremony will be representatives of the Newcastle community, which was devastated by the latest bombings in Bali which killed four Australians this month.

In Melbourne, a permanent memorial to the victims of the 2002 bombings will be unveiled in Carlton during a service for friends and family of the Australian victims.

And in Sydney, photographs of 20 victims of the 2002 bombings have been added to a permanent memorial at Coogee Beach in time for a service there today.

Perth will host a simple dawn ceremony at Kings Park, while mourners will in Brisbane's will gather at Allambie Memorial Gardens and the Catholic Bishop of Denpasar, Benyamin Bria, will lead masses in Adelaide.
