The Grand Cayman Islands are located in the Caribbean. Named after the native word for alligator ("caiman"), the Cayman Islands are a popular destination for tourists and travelers who want to experience the balmy weather and pristine landscape of the area. Visitors can chose from a wide variety of activities, including swimming and diving, visiting the Cayman Turtle Farm or striking out on the Mastic Trail through the island's forests.

Tourism Industry

The Cayman Islands population is approximately 52,000. Tourism accounts for more than 70 percent of the gross national product. Between 75 and 80 percent of the islands' residents work in the tourism industry. The Cayman Islands includes three sister islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Grand Cayman is the largest island and most of the tourism is centered there.

Attractions

The Cayman Islands has developed into a popular tourist center because of its proximity to North America. In addition to the Cayman Turtle Farm and the rustic Mastic Trail, the Cayman Islands are best known for their pristine beaches and clear blue waters. Grand Cayman's Seven-Mile Beach attracts the majority of visitors. Most of the hotels are located along this beach and the beach serves as the center for the many water sports, including swimming, diving, sailing and fishing.

Transportation

Most of the tourists who come to the Cayman Islands arrive on day visits as part of their cruises. The cruise ships enter the Cayman port and boats ferry the visitors back and forth to the island. Tourists who intend to come to the Cayman Islands for a longer visit can come by plane. Two airfields serve the dozen airlines that bring visitors. Rental cars are available and minibuses run along the main routes. Taxis are also available for hire.

Language and Health Information

English is the main language of the Cayman Islands. The islands have two hospitals that provide basic health care. Even the most remedial care is quite expensive on the islands, and tourists should ensure they have adequate travelers health insurance. This includes ambulance and third-country insurance, because patients who need extended care can be evacuated to Miami.

Weather Information

The weather on the Cayman Islands is warm and balmy year-round. Hurricane season tends to be in late summer or early fall and tourists are advised to plan their trips at other times of the year. The Cayman Islands are hit or brushed by hurricanes on an average of every two years.
