Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton danced with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and was joined on stage by a miniaturized version of herself in a show to air Thursday.

The former Secretary of State's blue pantsuit was matched by a five-year-old wearing the same outfit during taping of an episode that also featured comedian Amy Schumer and singer Pink.

Clinton's appearance, which comes after a summer that saw her once sizable lead in the Democratic primary shrink, was seen as an attempt to bring a lighter touch to the campaign as it enters the autumn.

Stills of the Ellen Degeneres Show featured Macey Hensley, a 'presidential expert', asking the front-runner questions about her own life and US history, according to MSNBC.

A Vine message sent out by NBC producer Frank Throp V showed Hillary dancing with the young girl, who had previously appeared on the show, while Pink swings her hands in the air and Ellen joins in.

Hensley waved presidentially and comedian Schumer also appeared in an iceskating costume for the show.

However, the appearance in the middle of New York's Rockefeller Center also featured questions about the scandal that has been dogging Clinton's campaign all summer, the use of a private email server while he worked at the State Department.

'I made a mistake, I’m sorry for all of the confusion that has ensued, I take responsibility for that,' Clinton told DeGeneres.

'I am now trying to be as transparent not only as a I can, but as anyone ever has been.'

DeGeneres's show is the first of many media appearances as she tries to recover from lingering questions about the server.

After enjoying large leads over socialist challenger Bernie Sanders this spring, a recent NBC poll showed that the Vermont senator was beating Clinton in nearby New Hampshire, and had closed the gap to around 11 points in Iowa.

A national poll released Tuesday by Monmouth University saw her with more than double the support of Sanders with 42 per cent to his 20.

Vice President Joe Biden, who is not even yet declared for the race, saw 22 per cent support.

Aides to the former First Lady told the New York Times that she wanted to show more 'humor' and 'heart'.

She will appear on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon the night before her Republican rivals take the stage for their second debate.

Not all Democrats are falling behind the recovery effort, however.

Former Obama consultant David Axelrod tweeted that the New York Times piece about Clinton's plan for authenticity 'read more like The Onion', a satirical website.

The Ellen appearance is thought to be part of Clinton's effort to reach out to woman voters, and in recent days she has criticized GOP candidates on women's rights.

DeGeneres spoke about the issue of gender in the race during the taping.

'I personally believe that women are held to a different standard than men. We are held to a different standard for our weight, for our age, for our looks, for everything,' she said.

'It is not fair. You are the smartest, most qualified person for this job.'
