Sam Smith CONFIRMS recording James Bond theme song... as he reveals it took 20 minutes to pen Spectre track Writing's On The Wall

Sam Smith has confirmed that he recorded the theme song for the new James Bond film, Spectre - and it only took him 20 minutes.

Calling it one of the highlights of his career, the 23-year-old revealed that the track - co-written by the Latch hitmaker - will be called Writing's On The Wall when he put an end to speculation with a string of tweets on Monday night.

Sam, who previously denied any involvement in the project, dropped a major hint that he was behind the theme song when he shared a snap wearing a ring emblazoned with the Spectre logo that night.

The vocalist said: 'This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song.

'I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.'

Opening up about the 007 experience to Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 1's Breakfast Show on Tuesday, Sam said it had been like a 'top secret mission' his own, admitting it was the quickest he'd even penned a song.

He began: 'I'm so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been a top secret mission of my own.

'I got called into the office with (producer) Barbara Broccoli and (director) Sam Mendes and they gave me the script, I read the script ... they said, "Have a go at the song."

'It's the quickest I've ever written a song - it took 20 minutes - and they loved it. I love the song so much.'

A four-time Grammy Award winner with five No1s under his belt, Sam becomes the first British male solo singer of a James Bond theme song since 1965.

There was fervent speculation that he was involved earlier in the track this year but it was previously shot down by the singer when he told Capital FM's Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon in July that it wasn't him.

He explained: 'People seem to think I'm doing it but I have no idea what's going on. I'm being deadly serious. I think I would know by now.'

He added that believed singer Ellie Goulding was going to record it, though he revealed to Radio 2's Chris Evans on Monday that producers only told him the news six weeks ago, to avoid a leak.

But his first major hint came on Monday night when he posted a black-and-white snap to his 4.7million followers without comment.

It was evident that it was the Grammy-award winner's hand in the picture as his finger tattoo was clearly visible.

The ring in question featured the identifiable octopus logo of Spectre, the villainous agency that 007 came up against in many of the early Bond films and whom will return for the 2015 film.

The logo has been a key part of the promo push for Spectre so far and featured on a poster for the film in December.

Later that month, the 28-year-old girlfriend of Dougie Poynter did little to fuel the rumours when she posted a snap of her leaving Abbey Road studios, captioning the post: 'That's a wrap!'

The studios are where singer Adele recorded the previous Bond movie Skyfall's soundtrack in 2012.

And it wasn't the first case of Ellie dropping a hint, with the Halcyon hitmaker dropping a Bond-themed clue, when she tweeted 'Live and let die' earlier that month - the name of the 1973 Bond film with Paul McCartney at the helm.

Commenting on the announcement, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the producers of Spectre, said, 'Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for Spectre and with Sam's extraordinary vocal performance, Writing's On The Wall will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time.'
