From riches to rags: Joanne Froggatt cuts a dowdy appearance as she films more scenes for chilling TV drama Dark Angel

She may have served downstairs as a lady's maid, but Joanne Froggatt is more used to the opulent surroundings of Downton Abbey.

Turning to the streets of Saltburn, Teesside as she filmed new chilling drama Dark Angel on Tuesday, Joanne cut a very different figure to former alter ego Anna Bates.

She was back in costume as the infamous Victorian serial killer Mary Ann Cotton and looked dishevelled with new, brown frizzy hair and scruffier 19th century garbs.

Joanne appeared fresh-faced as she continued to film the new ITV drama, which will follow the deaths of up twenty victims.

Among them, the historical killings of Britain's first female serial killer also included eleven of her own children by poisoning.

Which is why it was all the more chilling that Joanne was filming with a child on Tuesday's set - albeit a young dummy.

Calculated: Joanne certainly seemed to channel her emotionless, calculating character

The actress cradled a baby in her arms, appearing caring towards it as she practised scenes alongside co-star Alun Armstrong.

It's well-known though that Mary Ann was able to pull the wool over onlookers' eyes before her eventual arrest, conviction and execution.

The drama, unveiled earlier this summer in June by ITV, is set to begin with Joanne's Mary Ann acting the devoted wife and mother.

But, faced with living in poverty and an ill husband, she becomes ruthless in the pursuit of a better life, her method of poisoning those near to her leaving no visible scars, and often leaving her with a healthy insurance pay-packet.

Her weapon of choice was arsenic, a chemical she would utilise as poison, slipping it into her victims' food to give them severe gastric problems that would always result in death, although for many years it would seem her children and relatives died of natural causes.

Also, due to the laws around the civil registration of births, deaths and marriages in the mid-1800s, she managed to get away with her murders for years, with no record of all of her relatives and those close to her suspiciously passing in the same way.

Joanne, obviously highly-valued on set, broke away from her character at times on Tuesday to greet the crew members.

She was warm with an insight into her true persona, outside the realms of goody-two-shoes Anna and calculating Mary.

Since Downton wrapped on its sixth and last series last month Joanne has been snapped up for high calibre work almost instantly.
