A woman's unusual birthmark has earned her rapid fame on social media after she posted snaps on photo sharing website Imgur.

The mystery American woman, known only as Maxime, revealed what she describes as her 'natural tramp stamp', which has been viewed nearly 250,000 online.

Maxime wrote how she used to hate the birthmark, which is located on her left hip and is 'vaguely shaped like a dinosaur', but has now come around to its charms.

As several commenters of the images have pointed out, 'tramp stamp' is actually a slang term that describes a tattoo on the lower back, not the hip.

It may be a derogatory slur now, but tattoos in that area actually date all the way back to Ancient Egyptian times.

Talking about her unusual birthmark, Maxime wrote: 'When I was born, Mother Nature decided to give me a natural tramp stamp.

'Luckily, rather than it being in the middle of my lower back, it's pretty much right on my left hip.'

Maxime, who reasons her birthmark - located on her left hip - is shaped 'vaguely like a dinosaur', admits that she used to hate it, but has now come around to its charms

She described it as a 'bigass birthmark or dyspigmentation', and added: 'I have always hated it and since I can remember I've said "when I'm older I'm having it removed".

As I got older however I have realised its charm and grown to love it.

'Now, what makes this something out of the ordinary is the fact that it's (vaguely) shaped like a dinosaur, I think. Some people call it a turtle, some a dino, regardless it's kind of cute. It's my thing.'

Maxime even drew around the birthmark with pen to highlight its quirky shape. She says that when she was young, her parents would tell her that the mark was a result of them not applying sunscreen properly.

She also claims she has two other birthmarks elsewhere on her body, but they, unlike her anthropomorphic hip one, are just 'blobs and circles'.

Some Imgur users shared descriptions of their own birthmarks, but many of them have accused Maxime of being an attention seeker.

'Why in the hell is this on the front page?' one wrote. 'I kept hoping it would turn out funny or something, but no.'

Another states: 'Wait so if I post vaguely sexualised photos of my birthmarks turned into a cute animal I can get fake internet points too?'

According to the NHS, birthmarks either present themselves at birth or develop soon after.

It is not known exactly what causes them, but they are the result of clustered pigment cells and are usually not inherited.
