From the serenity of the sea at dawn to waves crashing ashore amid a violent storm: The prize-winning pictures of Britain's coast

  • Shipwrecked Mariners' Society recognised photographers for their stunning snaps taken around the country
  • Awards were handed out in six categories, including ships and shipwrecks, recreation and industry
  • Bernie Pettersen took the top award for his stunning snap of waves crashing ashore at Porthleven, in Cornwall

From its sandy beaches and piers to its white cliffs and sea stacks, Britain’s diverse coastline never ceases to amaze even the most hardened of travellers.

These spectacular photos are a testament to that, capturing the sea at its best and worst – from serene scenes of animals grazing to ferocious waves crashing ashore during a violent storm.

Each one was awarded a prize in the Shipwrecked Mariners' Society’s annual contest to find the UK’s best sea view.

The winner in the industry category was John Roberts for his stunning image showing a lone fisherman on a boat at dawn

One of the most photographed landmarks on the British coastline helped Bernie Pettersen land the top prize.

His image of the Bickford-Smith Institute clock tower, in Porthleven, Cornwall, was judged to be the overall winner.

Mr Pettersen, a former petty officer in the Royal Navy, was in the right place at the right time with his camera as storms battered the South West.

The professional photographer’s stunning snap was shared around the world and became a symbol of the February storm.

Mr Pettersen’s prize as overall competition winner is a five-day return ferry crossing from Dover to Calais.

He won a second award for his photo of a surfer riding a wave at Praa Sands, in Cornwall.

Winners were also named in four other categories which celebrate the beauty of Britain’s coastline.

John Roberts was recognised for his photo of a fisherman at dawn, while Rory Trappe was awarded a prize for his image of ponies at Llanddwyn, off the coast of Anglesey, North Wales.

The other winners were Lee Acaster for his black-and-white shot of Shingle Street, in Suffolk, and David Jenner’s snap of a ghostly shipwreck at Hoo Marina, in Kent.
