'She's a wonderful actress':  Writer behind Margot Robbie's Suicide Squad character gives seal of approval to star's portrayal of supervillain Harley Quinn

The writer behind Margot Robbie's character in Suicide Squad has praised the actress for her interpretation of the famous comic book role.

Paul Dini, who co-created Harley Quinn for Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, said he is looking forward to the 25-year-old's appearance in the film, due to be released next year.

Describing Robbie as a 'very wonderful actress,' Dini said he was eager to see her in the 'rougher, more street look.'

A former psychiatrist known as Dr Harleen Quinzel, Robbie's character leads a pack of supervillains recruited by a secret government agency to fight crime in Suicide Squad which will screen next summer.

The character first appears in the Batman story as the Joker's former psychiatrist who becomes sucked into his evil, underworld life.

Dini, who worked alongside Bruce Timms to create the character, told of how the pair initially came up with her 'tragic role'.

'She's a happy-go-lucky anti-hero. She's still a criminal and usually gets carted off to jail but there's something very likeable about her, she sort of goes her own way.

'She's fortune's fool and I like that a lot.'
