Not too Sexy In The City: Cynthia Nixon pairs her beautiful gown with some very comfy sandals

Cynthia Nixon was the epitome of style and grace last night at the Susan G Komen Global awards in New York.

That is, until you got a peek at her footwear!

The 44-year-old actress looked elegant in her stunning off the shoulder coffee and cream coloured tie-dye gown and her elbow length brown suede gloves, but as she posed for pictures she showed off what looked like a pair of Birkenstock flat sandals.

Happy couple: Cynthia Nixon posed with her girlfriend Christine Marinoni at the Susan G Kormen Awards on New York last night

The Sex and the City star was posed with her girlfriend of six years, Christine Marinoni, who looked very dapper in her black tuxedo suit and bow-tie.

In an interview with the Advocate Nixon once described her girlfriend as being: 'like a short man with boobs.'

She later went on to explain her comment, saying that she had actually been referring to Marinoni's fashion sense. 'It is a funny and cute quote,' she said. 'I was actually speaking about Christine's love of clothes, but how difficult it is for her to find suits that she fits into.

'She wears men's suits and she's a little short for a guy. It's a challenge.'

Nixon, who has two children from her marriage to English professor Danny Mozes, has been dating Marinoni since shortly after splitting from her husband in 2003.

Despite being in a relationship with a woman, the Sex And The City star refuses to define her sexuality, explaining: 'In terms of sexual orientation I don’t really feel I’ve changed... I’d been with men all my life, and I’d never fallen in love with a woman.

'But when I did, it didn’t seem so strange. I’m just a woman in love with another woman.'

Last May at a the Love, Peace and Equality rally in New York Nixon announced that she and Marinoni had become engaged.

She went on to say that they would soon wed.

But what's with those shoes? Nixon paired her gorgeous gown with some comfy, flat Birkenstock style sandals

Nixon elaborated further during an appearance on The View in May, explaining that they are currently unable to marry as New York doesn't permit same sex marriage.

'We're going to try and stick it out in New York,' she said. 'Fight the good fight, but we're not going to wait forever.'

In June it was announced that Nixon is set to make a return to the small screen, where she made her mark originally on HBO hit series, Sex And The City.

Nixon will be appearing in four episodes of the Showtime series, The Big C.

The show stars Laura Linney as a suburban mum diagnosed with cancer that tries to find humour in her everyday life and struggle.

Nixon will be able to relate to that struggle, two years ago she disclosed that she had successfully fought breast cancer.

She now serves as an Ambassador for Susan G Komen For The Cure.

Also at last night's event was fellow cancer survivor Olivia Newton John, Amy Sky, Deltra Goodrem and Tory Burch.
