The Queen might be the UK's longest reigning monarch but she isn't the only royal with a considerable workload on her hands.

New photographs have been released of the Duke of Cambridge sitting in his helicopter outside Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, following an emergency mission.

The Duke, 33, had just delivered a man who had suffered a heart attack to the hospital and is seen without his helmet and chatting to a member of the crew.

William has been working for the East Anglian Air Ambulance since July and flies with a team of paramedics who carried the man, thought to be in his 50’s, to a waiting ambulance.

The patient, who was later treated at the hospital's specialist cardiology centre, was dropped off in a park in the middle of the village of Papworth - much to the surprise of local families.

Jaime Storar, from Papworth, was watching her husband play bowls at St George’s Playing Field when she saw the helicopter touch down and the Duke get out.

'The helicopter quite often lands on the playing field as it’s right by the hospital, so I didn’t think much of it at first,' she said.

'I watched the crew get out the helicopter, then I suddenly recognised Prince William and did a double-take.

'The paramedics took the patient out of the helicopter and over to an ambulance and Prince William sat and waited for around 30 minutes.

'Then they got back in the helicopter and he walked round doing lots of checks and I could see him waving his arms and signalling.

'He looked very relaxed, you wouldn’t really have known it was him as he blended in with the rest of the crew.'

Last week William flew into Highpoint South prison in Suffolk, where Myra Hyndley served the last three weeks of her life sentence.

During that mission he was protected by four prison staff and his bodyguard, whilst three paramedics attended a prisoner, who was believed to have taken an overdose.

This time he was accompanied by one bodyguard and there was no police presence.

The Duke of Cambridge started work with the East Anglian Air Ambulance in July and is on a roster of day and night shifts which last nine and a half hours.

He flies an EC145 T2 aircraft and responds to emergencies in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, ranging from road accidents to heart attacks.

In common with all other East Anglian Air Ambulance pilots, Prince William is formally employed by Bond Air Services and will draw a salary which he donates to charity.

The Duke is thought to be marking the Queen's landmark reign privately at Balmoral, where he is believed to be staying with his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, and their two children.

Next week, the Duke and Duchess are expected to make an official appearance at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup at Twickenham, alongside Prince Harry.

The brothers, who will stay to watch England's opening match against Fiji, will make a joint visit to Manchester later this month.
