And that appears to be the case for Jake Gyllenhaal as he takes on the role of a grieving investment banker by the name of David in his upcoming feature, Demolition.
A first trailer was unveiled on Tuesday, showing the 34-year-old actor struggling to rebuild his life after losing his wife in a fatal car crash.

Rebuilding: Jake Gyllenhaal stars in a first trailer for his upcoming film, Demolition, in which he plays an investment banker grieving the loss of his wife
The clip begins with the suit-wearing star writing a letter of complaint to a vending machine company after failing to receive a packet of peanut M&Ms he had so badly wanted.
The snack time came minutes after his tragedy, leading him to divulge countless private details about his life and loss. This is only the beginning of the New Yorker's meltdown.
His letter inevitably catches the attention of a troubled customer service representative, Karen, played by Naomi Watts.
Stripped: The actor is seen shirtless during a nostalgic shower scene
Second look: The star realizes he didn't pay enough attention to his wife and marriage
The unlikely pair form a bond, and with the help of Karen's son, they put the pieces of Davis' puzzled life back together.
This includes fixing his torn-down home but is not without the disapproval of Davis' father-in-law (Chris Cooper).
Demolition will be seen at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday and releases to U.S. theatres on April 8.
Family ties: Jake, who stars as Davis, works for his wife's father
The film is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, whose past work includes Dallas Buyers Club and Wild.
Jake also has a few other highly-anticipated projects in the works, including Everest and Nocturnal Animals
Everest was drawn from Jon Krakauer's bestselling book Into Thin Air, which features detailed first person accounts of the terrifying adventure to Earth's highest mountain.
Rebuilding: He struggles with the loss of his partner who dies in a car crash
The star: The New Yorker begins to crack down after struggling with a vending machine
In a recent interview with Outside Magazine, it was revealed that the highly-anticipated movie had a $55 million budget and some scenes in Nepal were filmed at a whopping altitude of 16,000 feet.
'This project attracted people of similar minds.' Jake dished: 'You don’t just have actors sitting in their trailers. You have people who are physical and want to do some crazy s***.'
Nocturnal Animals, slated for a 2016 release, is based on the Austin Wright novel Tony and Susan.
