It seems even slimming black did little to disguise his expanding waistline as he bowled up to the Landmark E Street Cinema, hands wedged deep in his pockets.

The Oscar winner was beaming as he walked the red carpet, clearly delighted with the reception he received on his special day.

Russell stars as Joshua Connor in the movie, which tells the tale of a man who is coming to terms with the possibility his sons, who have gone missing in the Great War, are dead.

The title comes from the symbolism of water representing the spiritual connection Joshua shares with his three boys and his grief-stricken wife.

Determined to bring his son's bodies home, Joshua travels to Constantinople (now Istanbul) in Turkey, and stays at a hotel managed by a beautiful and mysterious woman named Ayshe, who is played by actress Olga Kurylenko.

He then tries to find a way to Gallipoli, where the battle he lost his boys in took place.

Ryan Corr plays one of his sons in the film with Jai Courtney, another Australian actor also starring.
