Winning a plethora of awards including a BAFTA, three Golden Globes and three National Television Awards, the show has been screened in more than 100 countries globally, but will draw to a close this Christmas with its sixth series.

While the latest series has been shrouded in secrecy, Jim Carter, who plays Carson, has hinted that the new series will contain three weddings and lots of emotional goodbyes ahead of the last ever episode on Christmas Day.

'We say goodbye to the characters but it's not final. We see them set off on different paths. It's really satisfying and you will need two hankies on Christmas night,' he teased.

The final series of Downton Abbey begins on ITV on September 20.
