'We made a big mistake': Justin Theroux faces new threats in tense new trailer for season two of The Leftovers

It looks like departures are the least of this town's worries.

A tense new trailer for season two of The Leftovers has just been released.

And despite reaching the only place in the world untouched by the Sudden Departure, Justin Theroux's Kevin Garvey is not even close to escaping trouble.

Season one of the hit drama was set three years after a global event in which two per cent of the world's population - 140million people - mysteriously disappeared on the same day, including Kevin's unborn child from his pregnant wife's womb.

Season two sees Kevin move to Jarden, Texas - the only town on the planet that had zero departures.

'Our grandmother used to tell us kids this place was chosen... The Jarden of Eden,' Regina King, who joins the cast this season, reveals at the start of the clip.

'And then on October 14th, people went away from everywhere except here. She was right: this place was chosen.'

Many who were left behind, including Matt Jamison - played by Dr Who star Christopher Eccleston - believe the departure was a holy rapture, and that those who remain are sinners - indeed the creepy silent cult from season one, which includes Kevin's wife among its ranks, are called the Guilty Remnant.

However the residents of 'Miracle, Texas' clearly believe they were the ones blessed by God.

As fans seen from the first trailer released last month, the town is a point of fascination among the rest of the world.

'These people are waiting for weeks to get in for ten hours just to buy a T-shirt,' a voiceover claims.

But Jarden is clearly not the safe haven it purports to be as tensions are seen boiling over in the 90 second clip, with flashing scenes of blood and violence, guns and fire.

In one scene Matt is seen shorn and bound in a stockade, while another man - apparently a dressed-in-white member of the Guilty Remnant - is tied up and doused in petrol.

'We're not safe... we're not spared,' King declares, while Theroux seems to agree with her sentiment: 'We made a big mistake.'

An unsettling new poster for the series also shows Theroux underwater, reaching for Matt's sister Nora (played by Carrie Coon), as but is held by a rope tied around his leg.

Season 2 of The Leftovers, which also stars Liv Tyler Amy Brenneman and Chris Zylka, premieres on October 4 on HBO.
