Sam Champion's morning show cancelled by Weather Channel just days after he returns from two week beach vacation with his husband

  • The Weather Channel has cancelled Sam Champion's morning show
  • The news comes days after  Champion returned from a two week beach vacation with his husband Rubem Robierb to Mykonos and Majorca
  • The channel is moving towards less original programming, and also cancelled Al Roker's show last week
  • The moves comes after Weather.com posted higher revenues and profits then the television channel last quarter
  • Champion worked his way up at ABC for 25 years  before landing on Good Morning America, which he left for his new job in late 2013

The sun may be shining, but it is a bleak day for Sam Champion.

The weather anchor who worked for 25 years at ABC before leaving for The Weather Channel in late 2013 has lost his morning newscast.

It is not all gray skies however for Champion, who will still stay on at the network and remain a full-time host with a focus on 'prime time and digital ventures.'

He received the news just days after he returned from a two week vacation to Mykonos and Majorca with his husband Rubem Robierb.

CNN Money reports that the reason behind this is the fact that last quarter, the website Weather.com 'had higher revenues and profits than its TV business.'

The network will now pull back on original programming and has laid off 50 employees.

Weather Company CEO David Kenny said in an interview, 'we're now a technology company that owns a TV channel, not a TV company.'

This means the network will not do straightforward weather throughout the day.

Champion, 54, had been hosting a three hour morning program that also featured entertainment and lifestyle aspects, almost in the same vein of what he did at Good Morning America.

October 30 will be the final episode.

'Over the next several months, you will see us further simplify our branding across all dayparts,' said Dave Shull, the president of the Weather Company's TV division, in an internal email.

'Regardless of the time of day, our mission is the same -- to provide the best weather forecasts and stories, and scientific expert explanations of those forecasts.'

Champion has yet to comment on the network's new direction.

Last week, Weather Channel announced they had also cancelled Al Roker's morning show, Wake Up With Al.

Champion meanwhile received the news after returning from an August holiday with his husband Rubem Robierb.

The two visited Mallorca, and Champion shared countless pictures on Instagram as they enjoyed the beaches and their time off from work.
