Blockbuster: Suicide Squad, starring Will Smith, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne, is due to be released next year. The writer behind some of its most famous characters says he has no creative stake in the film
Paul Dini, a writer and television producer, co-created Robbie's character for the 1992 programme Batman: The Animated Series.
It was with co-writer Bruce Timms that Dini came up with Harley Quinn, a former psychiatrist who falls into a sordid life of crime after being seduced by the Joker, one of her patients.
Robbie undertakes the role in Suicide Squad, appearing onscreen in playful costumes with her blonde hair parted into bunches.
Star: Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn in the movie with Dini describing the actress as 'very talented'
Creative: Jared Leto's take on the Joker is reminiscent of a 'down and out rocker', said Dini who praised the actor's portrayal of the character
And while New Yorker Dini approves of the Australian actress for the role, he will have to wait with the rest of the world to watch her performance.
Excited: Writer Paul Dini said he is looking forward to the film's release
'The thing with the character is, yeah I created her, but I know that she's other people's toys at some point.
'I can't get too possessive over that, I have no creative stake in the movie at all. I can just go and pay my $12 and hope to enjoy it.
'It'll be fun to see what they do with her,' he told Shanlian on Batman, a podcast dedicated to the franchise.
While Dini's original conception of the character was for an animated series, her appearance in Suicide Squad aims to show she would look in real life.
Speaking of the difference, he said: 'Suicide Squad has a very definite look to it, it's a real world look. It's not a hyper reality.'
Of Leto's take on the Joker, he added: 'He is almost like a rock star, without being Marilyn Manson there are elements of Marilyn Manson or like of a punk rock star.
Imagining the character and his sidekick in real life, Dini likened them to 'down and out rockers'.
'They would look dangerous. I know it's jarring for a lot of people who love the classic look, I love it myself, but in that world, I just don't see it happening.'
Suicide Squad is due to be released next summer.
