Emily Ratajkowski and Dakota Fanning stun in mini-dresses as they attend NYFW event celebrating 'It Girls'

It is but for a brief instant that someone can claim the title of 'it girl'.

Rising to the top of the ever-changing new crop of stars are two of Hollywood's hottest prospects - Emily Ratajkowski and Dakota Fanning.

And celebrating this intangible achievement, the two young actresses were honoured on Thursday at W's It Girl Luncheon during New York Fashion Week.

The honour for this event is in simply being invited to the luncheon and to be toasted by emcee Lynn Hirschberg.

Emily, 24, wore a thigh skimming leather mini-dress as she stood tall in nude heels, clearly earning her title as one of the ephemeral elite.

The Blurred Lines dancer wore her luxurious brunette locks in flowing waves over her shoulders as she posed for snaps at the event.

With her blonde locks styled in a neat part, she wore open toe silver heels while toting a pink leather handbag.

Dakota told WWD that the luncheon was her only engagement on Thursday and that she was soon heading off to film postwar political drama American Pastoral.

The I Am Sam star was invited last year to the same event, making it to the 'It Girl' list two years in a row.

At the event last year, Dakota said self-deprecatingly: 'I think of somebody who’s not me!

'When you hear that, you think of someone who’s very chic and cool.'

'And it’s exciting to be in a room with all these chic, cool girls,' she added according to W magazine.

W's October cover girl Allison Williams also attended the chic event at the Colony Club wearing a stunning orange Antonio Marras dress with blue floral motif.

The Girls star revealed she wasn't planning on attending any New York Fashion Week events, telling WWD: 'I don’t think I've ever not gone to a single show before.'
