প্রথম রিচার্ড (৮ই সেপ্টেম্বর ১১৫৭ - ৬ই এপ্রিল ১১৯৯) ৬ই জুলাই ১১৮৯ থেকে আমৃত্যু ইংল্যান্ডের রাজা ছিলেন। একই সময়ে তিনি ছিলেন নরমান্ডের ডিউক (চতুর্থ রিচার্ড হিসেবে), অ্যাকুইটাইনের ডিউক, গাসকনির ডিউক, সাইপ্রাসের লর্ড, আনজুউয়ের কাউন্ট, মাইনের কাউন্ট, নান্তেসের কাউন্ট ও বিভিন্ন সময় ব্রিটানির ওভারলর্ড। তিনি ছিলেন ইংল্যান্ডের রাজা দ্বিতীয় হেনরির পঞ্চম পুত্র ও তার মাতা ছিলেন অ্যাকুইটাইনের এলিনর। তিনি ছিলেন সেনাবাহিনীর মহান নেতা ও যুদ্ধা; এজন্য তিনি সবার কাছে রিচার্ড লায়নহার্ট বা রিচার্ড কুয়ের দে লায়ন নামে পরিচিত ছিলেন। মুসলমানরা তাকে মালেক রিক (রাজা রিচার্ড) বা মালেক আল-ইনকিতার (ইংল্যান্ডের রাজা) নামে ডাকতেন।

১৬ বছর বয়সে তিনি তার সেনাবাহিনীর দায়িত্ব নেন ও পোইতুতে তার পিতা দ্বিতীয় হেনরির বিরুদ্ধে গড়ে উঠা বিদ্রোহ সাফল্যের সঙ্গে দমন করেন। ফ্রান্সের দ্বিতীয় ফিলিপের পর তৃতীয় ক্রুসেডের সময় তিনি ছিলেন প্রধান খ্রিস্টীয় কমান্ডার যিনি সালাউদ্দিনসহ তার অন্যান্য মুসলমান প্রতিদ্বন্দীর কাছ থেকে যুদ্ধ করে বিজয় ছিনিয়ে আনেন। যদিও তিনি [[সালাউদ্দিনের কাছ থেকে জেরুজালেম জয় করতে পারেন নি।

রিচার্ড ফরাসি উপভাষা ও ফ্রান্সের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলের রোমানিয়ান ভাষাসহ আশেপাশের অঞ্চলের কয়েকটি ভাষায় দক্ষ ছিলেন। তিনি ফ্রানের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিমাঞ্চলের অ্যাকুইটাইনে বসবাস করতেন এবং ইংল্যান্ডে খুবই অল্পসময় কাটিয়েছেন। এছাড়া তিনি তার সেনাবাহিনীর রসদ দেওয়ার জন্য তার রাজ্যকে রাজস্ব আদায়ের উৎস হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে ভালবাসতেন। তার লোকজনের কাছে তিনি আন্তরিক নেতা হিসেবে পরিচিত ছিলেন। তিনি ইংল্যান্ডের খুব অল্পসংখ্যক রাজাদের মধ্যে অন্যতম যিনি তার রাজ্যের সংখ্যা দিয়ে নয় বরং তার নিজের বিশেষণে দিয়ে স্বরনীয় ও তিনি ইংল্যান্ডে ও ফ্রান্সে একজন অনুসরনীয় ব্যক্তিত্ত্ব হিসেবে জনপ্রিয়।
