From riches to rags! Hugh Bonneville looks unrecognisable as he returns to pirate garbs for US TV show Galavant on Bristol set

He's best known for his role as immaculately-dressed Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham, in Downton Abbey.

But actor Hugh Bonneville, 51, appears to have had a complete transformation as he was spotted filming scenes for American TV show Galavant in Bristol Harbour on Friday.

The British star looked unrecognisable as he got into character playing Peter the Pillager, the Pirate King, in the US fantasy musical series.

Seen filming aboard the Matthew - a replica of the English ship that discovered North America in 1497 - Hugh looked completely different from his famous role as Lord Grantham in the ITV period drama.

The London native cut a rather scruffy figure for his part as the Pirate King, sporting an unkempt beard, scraggly hair and ragged clothes.

He also looked the part with a waistcoat and a pirate sword in his pocket - not to mention his tanned appearance.

Hugh was also joined by British actor Joshua Sasse, 27, who plays the dashing knight, Galavant, as well as US star Timothy Omundson, 47, who plays evil King Richard.

Earlier on Friday, crew were seen erecting lighting equipment and tents in preparation for filming around Bristol Harbour.

The cast were also seen filming at the Bottle Yard Studios in the city, according to the Bristol Post.

The show launched in the US in January 2015 and follows the adventures of Galavant, who is determined to seek revenge on the evil King Richard, after he stole the love of his life, Madalena.

Downton Abbey star Sophie McSheara, comedian Ricky Gervais and actor Vinnie Jones appeared in the first series, while singer Kylie Minogue has just wrapped filming for an appearance in the second series.

Season 2 of Galavant will premiere in the US in 2016, but has yet to receive a UK release date.

Meanwhile, actor Hugh - who's appeared in Downton Abbey since 2010 - recently revealed that the script for the show's final episode nearly brought him to tears.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz, the actor joked: 'The spaceship took me by surprise but, that aside, I thought it unfolded in a way that felt entirely right for the show.'

He added: 'I got a lump in my throat reading it but I think that was as much because I knew it was the last ever episode that I was going to read and they are scripts that are a pleasure to read.'

He also reckoned that fans of the show will be happy with how it ends, saying: 'I feel that the way the stories are either resolved or left open is entirely right.'

The final series of Downton Abbey airs on ITV on 20 September, with the finale on Christmas Day.
