Johnny Depp has joked that he would fly to Australia and 'assault' Barnaby Joyce if his wife Amber Heard is thrown in jail over the dog smuggling controversy.

The actor, 51, slammed Australia's Agriculture Minister and described him as a 'weird, sweaty-pated gut man' after he said Depp's two Yorkshire terriers should 'b***** off' or risk being put down.

And while the star slammed Mr Joyce during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday, he showed his affection for the talk show host with a big kiss on the lips.

Kimmel planted a kiss on his handsome guest as he walked out, and later teased Depp about his heartthrob status.

'There are a lot of handsome guys in Hollywood, guys that women get excited about, but you struck a nerve somewhere in the 90s and that is never going to go away,' said Kimmel.

'This audience is so horny for you right now.'

'That'd be quite the undertaking,' Depp joked back.

The actor told Kimmel his Australia dog ordeal was 'by far the most interesting' legal trouble he had ever experienced.

When asked what he would do if his wife was sent to prison, the 52-year-old said: 'If they did that I'd fly to Australia and assault that man (Joyce). So that I could go to jail.'

Heard, 29, is facing a possible 10-year prison sentence and a hefty fine for illegal importation and producing a false document.

During the chat show, Depp also joked that his beloved dogs, Boo and Pistol, acted as perfect cover to mask other things he had smuggled in on his private jet.

'There might have been other things smuggled. They seemed to miss that bit,' he told the show.

His dogs became embroiled in a media storm in May when they were discovered in Queensland, after seemingly having bypassed the usual conditions for animals brought into Australia.

But the Pirates of the Caribbean star insisted he believed he had the necessary paperwork when he brought his dogs into the country.

'We were under the impression we had the correct paper work for the dogs, we were there with the dogs in front of everybody,' he said.

'If that's legal trouble, it's by far the most interesting I've ever experienced.'

Depp failed to hide his distaste for Mr Joyce when the talk show played clips from his press conference in which he threatened to euthanise the dogs.

He said: 'You know maybe he's just doing his job. This weird sweaty gut man who decided to five inch teacup Yorkshire terriers would harm the country in some way. He's got a point.

'Especially when you consider Australia has the most poisonous creatures on earth. Everything will kill you within minutes.'

The award-winning actor has previously joked that had 'killed his dogs and ate them' after they were deported.

During a press conference for his new film Black Mass he suggested that he acted 'under direct orders from some kind of sweaty big-gutted man from Australia'.

His wife's court case, which alleges that she illegally smuggled their two dogs into Queensland during filming for the next Pirates of the Caribbean, has been adjourned until November 2.

She did not appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

The dogs' presence in Australia only came to light when they were photographed at a grooming salon.

The couple, who were staying at a rented home in the Gold Coast, were issued a strict warning demanding they remove their terriers from the country within 50 hours or risk having them put down.

Pistol and Boo returned to the United States days after their discovery in late May, with Amber later indicating an unwillingness to return to the country.

Depp was on the chat show to promote his new movie Black Mass and admitted he nodded off repeatedly while watching it for the first time.

But rather than being the movie's fault, Depp admitted he struggles to watch any films.

'I have a problem watching films of any kind, unless it's a documentary, I can watch those,' he said.

'But cinema, films, I become narcoleptic.'

After explaining that he 'broke my rule' of not watching his own movies by actually sitting through a screening of Black Mass at the Venice Film Festival, he insisted his narcolepsy kicked in.

'I fell asleep about 15 times,' he said, adding that his wife had to repeatedly nudge him to wake him up.

He also revealed that he got his Boston accent to play notorious mobster James 'Whitey' Bulger by hanging out with 'one of my all-time guitar heroes, Joe Perry from Aerosmith'.

'Joe's got a pretty good thick Boston accent, so I just sponged it,' Depp admitted.

Depp and Kimmel had continued their late night 'bromance' where they left off - with a kiss.

The last time Depp was on Kimmel's show they had shocked viewers with a full kiss on the mouth.

'There are a lot of handsome guys in Hollywood and there are a lot of guys that women get excited about - but you struck a nerve somewhere, like, in the 90s that is never going to go away,' Kimmel told him.

'This audience is so horny for you right now.'

A blushing Depp joked that it would be 'quite an undertaking' to follow through on that.

Kimmel told him: 'But I think you could do it - I really think you could get through everybody. Hey, do you love your fans or not?'

'I do and I'll prove it,' Depp said to wild applause. 'I will.'

They also spoke about Johnny's new album Hollywood Vampires with Joe Perry, Alice Cooper, Matt Sorum, Duff McKagan and guest appearance from The Doors' Robby Krieger and even Sir Paul McCartney.

The band did not perform, as previously speculated.

Instead, the band MuteMath played on the roof, with Kimmel saying: 'I don't think we've ever had a band on our roof before - and we picked the hottest day of the year to do it.'
