Wearing a steely expression and thick-rimmed glasses, the Australian actor failed to raise a smile as he arrived at Entertainment Weekly's Must List Party.

Representatives for the star tell Daily Mail Australia he has undergone the transformation ahead of his forthcoming role in The Lovings, directed by Jeff Nichols.

The actor will play Richard Loving who was jailed in 1967 after marrying his wife Mildred. Their union was considered a violation of state law in Virginia where interracial marriages were deemed illegal.

The pair were however freed after the Supreme Court unanimously found their imprisonment to be unconstitutional.

Following their release, the number of interracial marriages in the area soared. The historic event is still marked and known as Loving Day on June 12.

The former Secret Life of Us star is already generating awards season buzz, with Vanity Fair saying: 'Edgerton’s been turning in stellar supporting performances for years now, but this ought to be his moment to elbow into the best supporting actor Oscar field at last.'

Joel will next be seen in the mob movie Black Mass, a movie already creating Oscar noise.

He will star opposite Johnny Depp as corrupt cop John Connolly in the movie based on the real life Boston criminal Whitey Bulger and the FBI agent who helped him.
