Her eldest child celebrated her 16th birthday this week.

But Reese Witherspoon was playing doting mum to her youngest sprog on Saturday.

The 39-year-old actress and her two-year-old son Tennessee looked cute as they walked along hand-in-hand in Santa Monica.

The pair of them wore matching white tops as they headed out for lunch with their family at the Casa Del Mar restaurant on the waterfront.

Reese was in full summer attire teaming her pain tank top with a colourful floral skirt with a scalloped hem.

The pretty skirt finished several inches above her knees, meaning her lovely toned legs were on full display.

Reese Witherspoon was the epitome of a Southern belle in her white shirt, fedora and floral skirt while out and about with her son Tennessee.

Even her bag was emblazoned with a typical greeting from the south - hello, sugar!

The talented mum-of-three rounded off her daytime outfit with red sandals and a straw hat.

She protected her eyes from the Californian sunshine in tick-rimmed sunglasses and under her hat wore her long blonde tresses in a straight style down by her shoulders.

Reese, who is married to talent agent Jim Toth, carried her essentials in a large navy tote bag which has the words 'hello, sugar' scrawled across its front in gold lettering.

Little Tennessee, who turns three at the end of the month, had paired his white top with green and black plaid shorts and tiny grey trainers.

The adorable tot seemed full of curiosity as he headed down the street holding on to his mum.

Reese is also mum to Ava, 16, and Deacon, 11, but while Tennessee belongs to Reese and Jim, the eldest children come from the actress' previous marriage to actor Ryan Phillippe.

The outing comes after the release of Reese's latest feature for Women's Health magazine, in which the acclaimed actress urged other females to be more confident in their own success while questioning why so many hard-working ladies are made to feel ashamed about their ambition.

'How wonderful it would be for our culture not to see ambition as an ugly thing within a woman’s personality,' she said.

'In our society, when we see women who want to succeed or who view themselves as leaders, it’s like, "How arrogant!" Well, I think it’s fantastic.'
