'Balotelli said: I don't mark corners... I can't! It was hard to manage mad Mario, but he made me smile. That wasn't the case with Diouf.' GERRARD REVEALS ALL IN THE FOOTBALL BOOK OF THE YEAR

Steven Gerrard reveals how he ran the rule over every new Liverpool signing in their first

STEVEN GERRARD - MY STORY: I reminded myself that I had always allowed every new player to come into the club with a clean slate. Mario Balotelli's reputation tested that resolve but I tried my best to be open-minded. He made an immediate impression when we were doing work on our defensive set pieces and Balotelli said to Brendan Rodgers: 'I don't mark on corners. I can't.' I nearly fell into the goalpost. I was thinking, 'What are you? Six foot three, and one of the strongest men I've ever seen on a football pitch? And you can't mark on a corner?' Brendan was very firm. He said to Balotelli: 'Well, you can now - and if you can't then you're going to learn.'

Jose Mourinho upset Chelsea staff over Eva Carneiro treatment, is feuding with Diego Costa

NEIL ASHTON - SPECIAL REPORT: As Jose Mourinho stomps around the training ground, Chelsea employees dive into side rooms or peek around corners to avoid their temperamental manager. Nobody wants to come into contact with him these days. Not when the mood is black and the atmosphere oppressive. Mourinho will not speak about the moment he shouted 'filha da puta' at the club's popular doctor Eva Carneiro during the 2-2 draw with Swansea City on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season. Privately, employees at the club are firmly on her side.

Magic Mason eclipses £22m Son to sneak Tottenham's first win of season against gloomy Sunderland (but Kane fails again)

Sunderland 0-1 Tottenham: Ryan Mason earns Spurs win with late goal after Jermain Defoe

MATT LAWTON AT THE STADIUM OF LIGHT: Until Ryan Mason scored what amounted to an excellent goal for Tottenham, this game was very much one contested by two teams struggling in their desperate search for a first win.  The visitors pinned much of their hope on Son Heung-Min, the most expensive Asian player in history and someone Mauricio Pochettino no doubt believed would combine effectively with Harry Kane on his debut.  But the Son did not shine at the Stadium of Light and nor, for that matter, did too many others tasked with the business of scoring goals in the Premier League.

JAMIE REDKNAPP: This is no time for Liverpool to panic... Top four can still be target for Rodgers

Fighting Foxes! Brave Dyer sticks his neck on the line and seals stunning comeback in dream debut as Leicester surge to SECOND

Leicester 3-2 Aston Villa: Ritchie De Laet, Jamie Vardy and Nathan Dyer complete stunning

LAURIE WHITWELL AT THE KING POWER STADIUM: What else should we have expected from a team who never know when they are beaten? Two goals down with 20 minutes to go, Leicester City used all their guts and creativity to claw three points from the grasp of an Aston Villa side on the verge of victory. It was a testament to the sheer bloody-mindedness of this group, still high on life after the remarkable escape from relegation last season. Those months at the foot of the table seem a distant memory. Leicester are second in the Premier League. The fighting spirit we know. What could not have been predicted is the identity and style of the winning goal. Nathan Dyer, all 5ft 5in of him, steered in a header one minute from time to send the King Power Stadium barmy.

Balotelli twice comes close to long-range equalisers but AC Milan lost to rivals Inter

Inter Milan 1-0 AC Milan: Fredy Guarin proves the difference for Roberto Mancini's men as

INTER MILAN 1-0 AC MILAN - Inter Milan beat local rival AC Milan 1-0 to move top of Serie A on Sunday, as Mario Balotelli failed to make an immediate impact against his old club on his second debut for the Rossoneri. Fredy Guarin celebrated his 100th league appearance with a stunning goal after Milan had wasted a number of chances. Balotelli, who rejoined Milan on loan from Liverpool last month, hit the post and went close with a free kick. Balotelli started his career at Inter before moving to Manchester City in 2010 and he came off the bench to deafening boos from the home fans shortly after the hour mark.

Fulham 2-1 Blackburn: Rovers robbed by awful decision not to award Hanley goal

Fulham 2-1 Blackburn: Rovers robbed after Grant Hanley's late header is disallowed

JACK GAUGHAN AT CRAVEN COTTAGE: The arguments will carry on long into the night, and quite right too. Luckless Blackburn Rovers were robbed by the officials thanks to the absence of goal-line technology, seemingly not deployed at this level purely for monetary purposes. Grant Hanley's shoulder looked to have produced a deserved equaliser at Craven Cottage. Over the line it flew, only for Jamie O'Hara to hook clear.

'I can pick up the phone and speak to all of my previous Liverpool managers. Apart from

STEVEN GERRARD - MY STORY: I don't think Rafa Benitez liked me as a person. I'm not sure why, but that's the feeling I got from him. It probably started even before he spoke to me, when he met my mum. Rafa was appointed as Liverpool's manager in June 2004 - and I was playing for England in the Euros in Portugal that summer. Even though he was being replaced by Rafa, Gerard Houllier still loved Liverpool and he remained very close to me. He and my mum flew out to Portugal to watch me play for England against Croatia - and they bumped into Rafa.

'For me, the ideal situation would obviously have been for Mourinho to have managed

STEVEN GERRARD - MY STORY: Chelsea fans are not my people. We've all worked that out over the years. I belong to Liverpool. Jose Mourinho understood my reasons; but each time he came in for me he was very persuasive. I liked the way he spoke to me and I could see how most of his players were ready to die for him. I remembered him winning the Champions League with Inter Milan and the devastation of his players when he left. You could see it in their faces.

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial geared up for stunning debut with shopping trip

Anthony Martial might be the world's most expensive teenage footballer, but that didn't stop him from visiting the modest setting of a Wetherspoons - a nationwide pub chain famed for its bargain prices. The Frenchman, who joined Manchester United in a deal that could rise to £58million from Monaco this summer, opted not to visit one of the regular haunts of his millionaire team-mates such as Wing's or San Carlo, and instead chose to have a low-key lunch with his wife and daughter.  Martial was spotted at the Trafford Centre branch of the chain on Thursday after having also been shopping at Boot's and Dorothy Perkins.

Bit slippy lads? Brazilian tie not abandoned despite ludicrously waterlogged pitch

Brazilian second tier match not abandoned in spite of ludicrously waterlogged pitch

When one thinks of Brazilian football it is usually the abiding beauty of seeing the likes of Pele, Socrates, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Neymar embarrassing defenders which crystallises in the mind. But when a brazen referee allowed Oeste to take on Boa Esporte at their Estadio Municipal dos Amaros on Saturday, he had no such respect for the beautiful game which Brazil has come to be renowned for. The game took place in unprecedented waterlogged conditions and in farcical scenes players were seen swinging air shots at the ball and falling over due to the treacherous conditions underfoot.

Steven Gerrard reveals how he ran the rule over every new Liverpool signing in their first training session to see if they were a Xabi Alonso or an El Hadji Diouf, a Luis Suarez or a Mario Balotelli
