  • Marcos Rojo defended Louis van Gaal in light of criticism of his methods
  • Defender did, however, say that his boss looked like a canine

  • Rojo has yet to play for United this season but is ready to return

Louis van Gaal only gets along with his players if they listen intently to him, Marcos Rojo has revealed.

Rojo admitted to being scared of his manager's 'bulldog face' but did defend the Dutchman, whose personality has been scrutinised as United continue to dither in the Premier League.

The defender's comments come in a week when details of mutiny in the Manchester United camp emerged, Van Gaal's regimented approach proving a real strain on the squad.

While United lie fifth with seven points from the opening four games, performances haven't picked up after Van Gaal's turgid first season at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick saw fit to question some of his methods after the slender win against Tottenham last month, with United only scoring two league goals since.

'He has a bulldog face, but he is great guy,' Rojo told Fox Sports Argentina. 'He's scary at first, but when you get to know him and relate to him on daily basis, you get along. But only if you listen to him.

'He has a really strong personality, but he is a great person. He listens to us, and even speaks a little bit of Spanish, so he always takes me to his office for a pep talk.'

Rojo has yet to play for United this season but is ready to return from a groin injury – although his future at the club did look bleak in pre-season.

The Argentine was fined £140,000 for turning up to their tour of America late because of passport issues and could have left Manchester for pastures new.

He did receive offers from elsewhere but was insistent on fighting for his place under Van Gaal, even though he was initially put forward during transfer discussions with Monaco over Anthony Martial.

Rojo's trouble with Van Gaal does not derive from his South American roots, though. Diego Forlan had suggested Van Gaal had never been a fan of players from the continent back in July.

'The fact that he holds a bad relationship with South American player is just a feeling [opinion],' Rojo added.

'I've been there with [Antonio] Valencia, [Radamel] Falcao, Angel [Di Maria] and he treated us all the same, he never treated us differently.

'Maybe because of his [poor] relationship with Roman [Riquelme] or with Angel leaving, some people got the wrong idea, but he treats us all the same. He is a great person and makes no differences between Europeans and South Americans.'
