Oscar De La Hoya reignites feud with Floyd Mayweather as he labels old rival's 49-0 record as the end of 'the worst boxing era'

  • Floyd Mayweather defeated Andre Berto to claim his 49th professional win
  • The 38-year-old has equaled the record set by Rocky Marciano
  • Oscar De La Hoya has questioned the credibility of this achievement
  • De La Hoya believes Mayweather's defensive style to be boring

Oscar De La Hoya has hit out at old rival Floyd Mayweather Jnr, as he took to Twitter to dismiss the Money Man's 49th professional victory as the end of 'the worst boxing era'.

Mayweather equaled Rocky Marciano's long-standing record after defeating Andre Berto by a wide points decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The 38-year-old was awarded the judges' verdict 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111 in what he insists is the last fight of his career.

Yet De La Hoya, who Mayweather beat in his 38th bout to win the WBC Light Middleweight title back in 2007, has moved to question the credibility of Mayweather's achievement.

De La Hoya, 42, is known to have criticised the choice of Mayweather's opponents in the past and his defensive boxing style.

He had earlier commented that he was happy to watch Disney films with his children rather than Mayweather's fight, before tipping the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux to provide an entertainment factor that the American could not.

Mayweather made £22million from his fight against Berto but few expect him to fulfil his promise to retire.

MGM are set to open a new arena next April and a rematch against Manny Pacquiao, who Mayweather defeated earlier this year in the most lucrative fight in history, or against the winner of the upcoming Cotto-Alvarez match might prove too tempting to pass up.

However, speaking after the victory over Berto, Mayweather told reporters: 'My career is over that's official.'

He added: 'You've got to know when to hang them up. I'm close to 40 now. There's nothing left to prove in the sport of boxing. Now I just want to spend time with my family.

'I am leaving the sport with all my faculties, I'm still sharp and smart. I've accomplished everything in this sport, there's nothing else to accomplish.'
