Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci pays homage to New York City's 'strength' and 'freedom' with bold black and white fashion week show

  • The designer described the runway show, which took place on September 11, as a 'love letter' to New York City
  • Riccardo, 41, showed a collection of beautiful monochrome pieces accessorized with bold gold embellishments and intricate lace masks
  • Kendall Jenner, Joan Smalls and Candice Swanepoel all walked in the show, while Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Julia Roberts attended

On a dystopian set with One World Trade Center beaming its blue light into the night sky, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci paid tribute to New York City on the 14th anniversary of 9/11, before a star-studded crowd - remembering tragedy and celebrating fashion at the same time.

Riccardo, 41, the French fashion house's creative director, worked with performance artist Marina Abramovic on the stark set of walls made of recycled metal and wooden shards, seating his huge crowd on stacked wooden pallets and benches for the show, which Marina described as being 'about forgiveness, inclusivity, new life, hope, and above all, love'.

His mostly-monochrome collection featured a series of perfectly-tailored ensembles that were beautifully-embellished with sheer panels, metallic studs and unique lace face masks.

Ditch the skinnies and go large this season in wide leg trousers

It wouldn't be New York Fashion Week without a few catwalk appearances from Kendall Jenner.

And the supermodel made her SS16 debut last night in the Givenchy show walking alongside other supers like Joan Smalls, Candice Swanepoel and Liu Wen. She looked stunning in this black and white ensemble and it's a look we don't need to wait for next season to recreate.

Wide leg trousers are a major trend for AW15 so there are plenty of options on the virtual high street that will see you all the way through until next summer. Start your search with our edit below.

Kendall Jenner, Joan Smalls and Candice Swanepoel were among the models seen showcasing the designs on the catwalk, while a star-studded front row included the likes of long-time Givenchy fan Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Julia Roberts, Uma Thurman and Nicki Minaj.

Second-time mother-to-be Kim showed off her growing baby bump in a sheer black lace gown, while Oscar-winning actress Julia donned a T-shirt adorned with a unique rendering of Riccardo's face.

Athletes Amar'e Stoudemire, Victor Cruz and Russell Westbrook, who is showing his own fashion line this season, were also in attendance, as was father-daughter duo Steven and Liv Tyler.

Givenchy calmed the crowd, which included more than 800 members of the public who received tickets to watch from the sidelines, with a soundtrack of chanting and other music honoring six cultures and religions.

Speaking to CNN ahead of the show, Riccardo explained his inspiration for the collection, and his enduring love for New York City.

'One big memory of New York was the freedom,' he said of his first visit to the city. 'The fact that you could say, you could dress, you could share with anybody whatever you wanted. When I arrived at the airport, I always had in my head, "I'm going to live in this country one day."'

He explained that the majority of his collections have been influenced by his love of America in one way or another, saying: 'I've used Bambi. I've used the American flag, a lot of elements that have been related to American culture...

'It's fun because anyone would like an animal from Walt Disney, anyone would like the American flag. I'm obsessed with the symbology of America: McDonald's, Marlboro, Coca-Cola, Nike. This big colossus that they've made. They are so strong for culture in the world. They've changed the culture.'

The collection itself was part elegant ease in roomy black trousers with loose ribbon on the outer seams and part boudoir come-and-get-me lace.

Some looks included eerie face adornments in lacy patterns while other models had multiple spike earrings with nodules attached at the tops of their nose bridges.

All of the models had their eyebrows bleached for the show, while the rest of their make-up was kept incredibly simple so as not to detract from the intricate designs.

Hair was, for the most part, left down, again in a very simple style, with most models wearing their locks tucked behind their ears, while those wearing the face masks and head pieces had their hair pulled back in order to draw maximum attention to the unique accessories.

Among the more glamorous looks was a black skinny trouser encased in a sheer structured shell.

And life certainly wasn't made easy for the models, who were forced to navigate a winding, open-air runway in treacherous heeled mules, including several steps up and down a makeshift staircase of stacked wooden pallets set in the middle of the catwalk.

Victoria's Secret favorite Candice actually toppled to her knees at one point during the show, but, like a regained her composure and completed the show, albeit with an embarrassed grin in place of the solemn faces modeled by most of the catwalk stars.

Christina Ricci explained at the show that she has a special fondness for Riccardo, having first met the designer ten years ago.

'He made my wedding dress for me and yeah, he's great,' she said on the red carpet ahead of the runway show.

Courtney Love was more specific about her love of Givenchy, saying: 'It's edgy, it's cool and it's kind of dark.'

Actress Julia, who was once featured in a Givenchy campaign, added: 'I definitely think that my cool factor went up when Riccardo asked me to do the campaign.'

For the Tylers, it was dad-daughter date night, a rare occasion for the two of them.

'We don't get them very often," Liv said. 'Usually there's a big pack of us, so to be alone is really special.'
