After Anthony Martial announced himself to the Premier League with a debut goal here's 10 teenage stars that burst on the scene with a bang... but how did they fare after?

  • Anthony Martial scored against Liverpool on his Manchester United debut
  • The 19-year-old came off the bench to score in 3-1 win against Liverpool
  • Wayne Rooney scored an incredible winner against Arsenal for Everton
  • Alan Shearer scored a hat-trick on his full debut for Southampton
  • Federico Macheda scored a last-minute winner on his United debut

Manchester United's £36million summer singing Anthony Martial silenced talk of his astronomical fee by scoring on his Premier League debut against the club's bitter rivals Liverpool on Saturday.

The most expensive teenager ever announced himself to Old Trafford by tying Martin Skrtel in knots before opening his body - Thierry Henry-style - and beating Simon Mignolet with a perfectly placed strike to end any hopes of a Liverpool comeback.

Meanwhile, the other half of Manchester were celebrating a first senior goal for 18-year-old Kelechi Iheanacho as the Nigerian earned City all three points against Crystal Palace with a late strike.

Martial and Iheanacho are not the first youngster to announce himself with a bang. Here, Sportsmail looks at 10 others but what direction did their careers take after?

MICHAEL OWEN

The former Liverpool striker burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old, scoring on his debut against Wimbledon at the end of the 1996-97 season, although it wasn't enough to stop the Reds falling to defeat, ending their title challenge.

The following season Owen won the Premier League golden boot before lighting up the 1998 World Cup with a magical goal against Argentina.

Owen enjoyed seven prolific seasons at Anfield, scoring 118 Premier League goals before moving to Real Madrid.

Perennial hamstring problems meant he was a fading force when he returned to England with Newcastle after just one season in Spain. He went on to play for Manchester United and Stoke before retiring in 2013.

JAMES VAUGHAN

When the tall, quick figure of Vaughan came off the bench for Everton against Crystal Palace on April 10, 2005 to make his first-team debut he became the youngest Premier League goalscorer at just 16 years and 271 days.

There were high hopes for Vaughan, who was already an England youth international, but a serious knee injury at the start of the 2005-06 campaign curtailed his progress. He could never establish himself at Everton and made only eight league starts for the club, taking in loan spells at Derby, Leicester and Crystal Palace before joining Norwich on a permanent transfer.

Vaughan moved to Huddersfield on loan before singing a permanent deal with the Terriers in 2013. The 27-year-old has scored 31 league goals for Huddersfield in three seasons.

ROBBIE KEANE

The Republic of Ireland international broke into the Wolves first team aged 17 and scored twice on his professional debut against Norwich. The pacey forward earned rave reviews and was rewarded with a big-money move to Coventry.

After an unsuccessful six-month spell at Inter Milan Keane was back in the Premier League with Leeds, first on loan before the deal was made permanent. But it was at Tottenham that Keane enjoyed most success scoring 80 top flight goals in six seasons at White Hart Lane.

A failed move to Liverpool saw him back at Tottenham before he sought pastures new at LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer, where he has been prolific.

ALAN SHEARER

Shearer hit the headlines after scoring a hat-trick for Southampton on his full debut to earn his side a famous 4-2 win against Arsenal - becoming the youngest player, at just 17 years and 240 days, to score a hat-trick in the top flight.

Shearer was soon the subject of an English transfer record-breaking bid of £3.6m that saw his sign for Blackburn in 1992. Shearer enjoyed four prolific seasons at Ewood Park and fired Blackburn to the Premier League title in 1994-95, netting 34 times.

The transfer record was again broken when Shearer joined boyhood club Newcastle for £15m, rejecting the chance to sign for Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United. He remains the all-time Premier League goalscorer with 260 goals.

FEDERICO MACHEDA

We all thought a star had been born when a 17-year-old Macheda came off the bench with Manchester United trailing Aston Villa 2-1 at Old Trafford in April 2009. After Cristiano Ronaldo had equalised, Macheda produced a stunning turn and finish to win the game, and arguably the title, for United in the third minute of injury-time.

During the next six years at the club Macheda managed just three more league goals and was sent out on loan six times to club's including Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster and Birmingham. The Italian joined Cardiff on a permanent deal last summer and notched just six goals in the Championship.

DANNY ROSE

Rose joined Tottenham from Leeds for £1m when he was 17 but had to wait almost two years before he made his Premier League debut - but it was well worth the wait. Eye-brows were raised when Harry Redknapp named Rose in the starting line-up against north London rivals Arsenal in April 2010 but the then 19-year-old opened the scoring with a thunderous volley as Spurs went on to win 2-1.

Loan spells at Bristol City and Sunderland followed before Rose was able to cement his place as Tottenham's first-choice left back. He enjoyed his best season in a Spurs shirt last season but has got off to a stuttering start this campaign after a couple of niggly injuries.

ALAN SMITH

A fresh-faced, 18-year-old Smith, donning blonde curtains, inspired a Leeds comeback at Anfield after coming off the bench to score on his debut against Liverpool. Smith levelled the match before the visitors went on to win 3-1.

Smith formed a key part of David O'Leary's young and exciting Leeds side that went on to reach the semi-final of the Champions League in 2001-02, though Smith was sent off as the run was ended by Valencia.

A move to Manchester United followed as Smith moved into a midfield role. Smith suffered a badly broken leg against Liverpool and failed to hit the heights of his early days at Leeds. He moved to Newcastle before spells at Milton Keynes Dons and Notts County.

WAYNE ROONEY

We were famously told by Martin Tyler to 'remember the name' and we certainly have. That piece of commentary came after a 16-year-old Rooney smashed home a winner against Arsenal for Everton in October 2003 to end the Gunners 30-game unbeaten run.

He became the most expensive teenager of all time when he joined Manchester United for £25m at just 18. Rooney has gone on to win five Premier League titles and is currently the third highest scorer in Premier League history with 185 goals.

FRANCIS JEFFERS

There was a lot of excitement surrounding Jeffers when he made his debut for Everton at just 16 years old coming off the bench against Manchester United on boxing day in 1997. He built a reputation as a fox in the box and it convinced Arsene Wenger to part with £8m for the young striker in 2001.

Jeffers failed to live up to the hype despite scoring on his international debut for England - his only ever cap. Jeffers' career saw him take in spells at Charlton, Blackburn, Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle Jets in Australia but he was unable to fulfill any of his early promise before retiring at Accrington Stanley ion 2013.

ROBBIE FOWLER

Fowler, often described as one of the most natural finishers this country has ever seen, scored on his Liverpool debut against Fulham in the League Cup in 1993 before scoring all five goals in the second leg two weeks later. Fowler then scored his first Premier League hat-trick in just his fifth appearance for the club.

Fowler enjoyed eight seasons at Liverpool where he scored 120 league goals before spells at Leeds and Manchester City preceded a return to Anfield. Fowler played out his final years abroad with North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory in the A-League and Muangthong United in Thailand.

Just 26 England caps and seven international goals probably don't do justice to a true goalscorer.
