NFL outfit Dallas Cowboys have overtaken Real Madrid to become the world's most valuable sports team. 

The Cowboys, owned by American businessman Jerry Jones, are said to be worth in region of $4billion (£2.59bn).

Despite not making it into the Super Bowl since their last appearance in 1995, Jones' side remain out in front of their rivals when it comes to their value, according to statistics produced by Forbes.

In fact, the Cowboys have held that title of the most valuable NFL side for the last nine years thanks to their impressive revenue figures and the AT&T Stadium. 

The 85,000-seater stadium has played host to events other than NFL during the past few years - with the venue hosting the NBA All-Star Weekend, College Football, football games and high-profile music concerts.

Real Madrid were above the Cowboys in July, however the La Liga giants have been knocked off of top spot.

New England Patriots follow shortly behind Real Madrid in third spot as they are the second most valuable NFL team.

The Patriots, who have the likes of Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski on their roster, are the current Super Bowl champions following their 28-24 win over Seattle Seahawks.

Barcelona and Manchester United are valued at £2.05bn and £2.01bn respectively but remain behind rivals Real Madrid. 

Washington Redskins are in sixth spot despite the demand for tickets at the FedEx field continuing to go on a downward spiral.
