Festival near MIT campus ends in violence after woman is shot in the leg and a fight breaks out - as police continue search for shooter who remains at large

A suspect is being sought after a woman was shot in the leg during a festival near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus on Sunday.

A 25-year-old woman was shot at the intersection of Main Street and Portland Street around 4.30pm and the shooting suspect is at large but not believed to be on campus, police said.

Chaotic scenes occurred following the incident as the Cambridge Carnival, an Afro-Caribbean festival, ended in violence following the shooting and a fight, which left four people injured, the Boston Globe reported.

The woman, who was shot blocks from the parade route, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Cambridge police spokesman Jeremy Warnick.

'At this point it is too early to determine if she was a target,' Warnick told the Boston Globe. 'This is an ongoing and active investigation.'

Shortly after the shooting, MIT officials had sent out an 'active shooter' warning to students telling them to evacuate if possible and to lock and barricade their doors. However, shortly they said the message was sent in error as they said the suspect was not believed to be on campus

Police broke up the fight and arrested one man, Warnick said. 

People were injured during the stampeding crowds and at least four people were treated for minor injuries, according to Warnick.

Scenes from the incident showed some of those injured being taken away on stretchers. Witnesses told NECN that that one woman had been trampled on during the chaos.

The Cambridge Festival had been peaceful until 4.30 when the shooting occurred. . The festival and parade, organized by a nonprofit group of volunteers, is meant to highlight Caribbean and Carnival traditions based on those of Brazil, Trinidad, and Tobago

Cambridge police say they do not believe the shooting and scuffle were related.
