  • Jessica believed Sherri wanted a baby and couldn't get pregnant

  • Even though Sherri would not be responsible, she is 'fighting tooth and nail to get that embryo destroyed'

When Jessica Bartholomew agreed to be the surrogate mother for Sherri Shepherd and then husband Lamar Sally it was out of her belief that the couple were deeply in love and wanted a baby to make their family complete because Sherri could not have a child of her own.

That wasn't the case, and now Jessica, 33, in an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Online, says she is furious with Sherri for betraying her, and more importantly, little baby boy, Lamar Jr., who is known as 'LJ', who turned one-year-old last month and is being raised by Lamar as a single parent.

'I will never help another mother have a baby,' an angry Jessica told Daily Mail Online.

'Sherri put me and my family through so much emotionally and almost ruined me financially so I will never trust anyone to go through that again.

Surrogate mother Jessica Bartholomew believed that Sherri  and Lamar were in love and wanted a baby to make their family complete because Sherri could not have a child of her own. She later learned otherwise

'I wanted to help her because she couldn't have a child of her own and it was supposed to be a beautiful thing. But it turned out to be a nightmare.'

Sherri, who has returned to The View as a lead contributor this season, has admitted that she wanted to have a baby not out of love - but to save her dying marriage.

'My situation was a sense of, I didn't state what I needed and what I wanted and what I didn't want for being scared of somebody leaving the relationship,' she told People magazine last month.

'There are consequences to everything, but I was scared to say, "That's not going to work for me. I don't want that."'

If I had known this was Sherri's attempt to save her marriage there is no way I would have agreed to this surrogacy. Since when has a baby saved a marriage? Never.

However, the mother who had her child said that she knew nothing of Sherri's position at the time.

'If I had known this was Sherri's attempt to save her marriage,' says Jessica, 'there is no way I would have agreed to this surrogacy. Since when has a baby saved a marriage? Never.'

Jessica explained prior to Sherri and Lamar she was a surrogate for another couple with twins and she loved it so she was eager to help another family.

Jessica went back to the same agency she used before and after being selected she had a telephone conference call with the agency, Lamar and Sherri.

'We talked for quite a while and by the time we finished we had agreed to go into this contract. Sherri said she really wanted to have a child with Lamar because it would make their family complete,' she said.

'They already had Jeffrey [who is 10] her son from a previous marriage and Lamar loved him unconditionally, but Lamar did not have any children and she wanted him to have that experience.

'They were hoping for another boy. We used Lamar's sperm and an anonymous egg donor.

'I received $25,000 to be the surrogate. But ironically, because of a medically induced medical condition I was out of work from May until October so I really didn't make any money on this arrangement, I actually went into a hole.'

But the fifth month of her pregnancy Jessica was shocked to learn that Sherri and Lamar's marriage fell apart amid rumors that Lamar was cheating, which he denies.

Sherri cited irreconcilable differences in the court documents.

Lj celebrated his first birthday last month. Jessica says she only met Sherri and Lamar twice through the whole pregnancy. The first time was when the doctors transferred the embryo into Jessica's uterus.

'I was shocked to hear their marriage was ending but then I was horrified to learn Sherri tried to back out of the surrogate agreement, saying she wanted nothing to do with the baby.'

Sherri claimed Lamar wanted to have this baby as a way to secure a big pay day through child support in case the marriage fell apart,  since he had signed a prenuptial agreement before they were married.  Lamar has denied this, insisting Sherri was the one who pushed to have this child in the first place and the reason they married as soon as they did was to start a family together.

In an emotionally charged conversation Jessica wanted answers. 'That was devastating to me, what about the baby?'

Jessica asked Lamar, 'what happened?' Lamar told Jessica he doesn't know but that she should not worry because he was going to take care of his son no matter what.

Jessica had no idea the situation would go from bad to worse. Shortly after Lamar Jr., was born on August 5, 2014, Jessica was hit with child support.

'Lamar needed to get healthcare for the baby so he went through government assistance and they automatically go after the other parent to collect support and since I was the birth mother and Sherri was denying any responsibility they came after me.

'I couldn't believe it. Sherri knew I was a waitress and a single mother but she didn't care, she just walked away and let them demand support from me when she was the one who wanted this child. I was helping her and this is how she repaid me. I will never, ever go through this again.'

At that point there was no reasoning with Sherri, 48, according to Lamar, 44, to take financially responsibility for the baby.

After realizing Sherri was not going to change her mind, Lamar took her to court to make her pay child support - and he won.

Jessica's name was ordered to be removed from the birth certificate and Sherri's name was ordered to be put on as the legal mother of this child.

Although Sherri is currently paying Lamar $4,100 a month for child support she has filed an appeal. She has since publicly admitted that she wanted to have a child by a surrogate to save her marriage.

'It has been a long, drawn out disaster and although it's not completely finalized for Sherri or Lamar I no longer have to send Lamar child support,' Jessica continued.

'That was so hard on me because I have two other children, I'm a waitress and going to school to finish my nursing degree. I could not afford to take care of Sherri's baby too, but if I didn't they were going to garnish my wages.

'I don't blame Lamar for this because the baby needed health care. But I could not believe Sherri turned her back on the baby and she completely disregarded my situation.

She knew I couldn't afford to take care of the baby but she didn't care.

‘She knew I couldn't afford to take care of the baby but she didn't care. I am not even related to the baby biologically, the egg was from an anonymous donor and Lamar's sperm, I was just carrying the baby.

'And there is another embryo if Lamar ever wants to give LJ a little brother but even though Sherri would not be responsible for that child she is fighting tooth and nail to get that embryo destroyed.

‘I loved helping the first couple so I was looking forward to it again. Now I regret it.’

Jessica says she only met Sherri and Lamar twice through the whole pregnancy. The first time was when the doctors transferred the embryo into Jessica's uterus.

'I thought that was odd but the agency said that's how celebrities are and not to worry about it. Sherri was very nice to me but as soon as the procedure was over they both left and I didn't hear from them again until I was 20 weeks pregnant when they came for the anatomy ultrasound,' Jessica added.

'That bothered me, a lot of red flags went off in my head but again the agency told me not to worry about that kind of stuff because celebrities are different and don't want to do or say anything in public that could be reported in the press.

'But most surrogate mothers are usually more excited about the baby and want to stay in touch with the surrogate on a regular basis to see how they are doing, if the baby is kicking or any other little tidbit so you would feel involved. But not Sherri. Nothing.'

After finally getting her name removed from the baby's birth certificate and Sherri was legally proclaimed to be the baby's mother Jessica has moved on with her life.

'I am so excited to say I am currently pregnant with my third child and got married on August 26 to the love of my life!' Jessica told Daily Mail Online.

Jessica says she met David, 46, a chef, a couple of years ago when they worked at the same restaurant.

'Actually I had just met David when I started the process to have a baby for Sherri and Lamar,' Jessica explained, 'and he was my rock, with me through all of the tough times and he never once complained.

'But after everything we went through he said there is absolutely no way I was going to be a surrogate for anyone else. It was awful and he didn't want to go through that again for any amount of money.

'But in spite of everything I hope it all works out for Lamar and the baby and I hope Sherri realizes what she has done and becomes a real parent to LJ. One day he is going to be an adult and may ask Sherri why she didn't want to be his mother.'
