Sergio Aguero will miss Manchester City's Champions League opener with Juventus but manager Manuel Pellegrini believes he will be back for the weekend.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's clash at the Etihad Stadium, the Chilean revealed his Argentine striker would sit out the match against the Italians after picking up a knee injury in Saturday's 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.

'Sergio also is not fit for tomorrow,' he said. 'He has a kick in his knee. It is difficult for him.'

Pellegrini added that playmaker David Silva and ex-Liverpool man Raheem Sterling are fit. Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho and French star Samir Nasir did not train with the rest of the team after picking up slight knocks but are expected to be available for selection.

City, who host West Ham United in Saturday's late kick off, have exited the Champions League at the last 16 stage at the hands of Barcelona in consecutive seasons.

But Pellegrini said he was only thinking about beating the Turin outfit rather than progressing further this year.

'We are not thinking where we are going to arrive,' he said.

'We are just thinking to win tomorrow against Juventus and try and qualify as we did in the last two seasons. After that we will see the draw. It is important to have your mind in tomorrow.'

Pellegrini, who picked up the manager of the month award after league leaders City's perfect start to the season, added that he was keen to avoid the Catalan giants should his side progress.

'It is very important to not only have a successful team here but in Europe but we need to go step by step.

'Maybe last year and the other years, Barcelona is a very strong team. I hope we will not play against Barcelona in the round of 16 and if we have to play against a strong team in the round of 16 we will see.'

Nigerian teenager Kelechi Iheanacho, who marked his debut with the winner at Selhurst Park, is not in the club's Champions League squad.

'It was very important for Kelechi but we could not put him in the squad list because we just had 17 players,' said Pellegrini, who also has former Swansea striker Wilfried Bony available.

'It is not the best moment to be without him but I think Raheem can also play as a forward so we have different options.'
