Inside the dingy Kansas City cave where police found two young boys 'forced to live out of shipping containers by their mom'

  • Police found the kids as they searched the Missouri caves for a stolen car
  • They were 'filthy, barefoot, living in a shipping crate under Kansas City'
  • The four-year-old was in a t-shirt, eating dirt and dry noodles from a pot
  • The six-year-old 'said he should be in 1st grade but doesn't go to school'
  • Mother Brittany Mugrauer, 24, has been charged with felony child neglect

This is the dingy Kansas City cave where police found two young boys living barefoot and filthy after allegedly being abandoned by their mother.

Officers arrested 24-year-old Brittany Mugrauer last week after spotting the children, aged four and six, as they searched for a stolen car.

She is charged with felony neglect and being held on a bond of $75,000.

However, the mechanic who owns the land claims he has evidence two young boys were not abandoned and living in the cave, and insists that Mugrauer should be released.

Sean Dale told the Kansas City Star the boys were merely playing around under the supervision of his mechanics.

'My two mechanics were here the entire time,' Dale told the Kansas City Star on Monday, adding that he has surveillance footage of the children coming and going from the site.

'I think the prosecutor needs to see it.'

The case became international news when Jackson County, Missouri, police reported finding the boys alone in an 8-by-10-foot crate as they investigated reports of a stolen car.

According to the police report, the children were poorly clothed, barefoot and covered in dirt.

The younger one was eating dirt and dry ramen noodles from a cup, dressed in a t-shirt and shorts.

The older child was wearing nylon pants that were inches too long.

Police documents read by the Kansas City Star say the children 'stated that they had no toys at the cave, no other clothing, no shoes, and that there was no water or place to cook'.

The documents also state: 'The six year old advised that he should be in the 1st grade but that he did not go to school.'

Mugrauer told police she had left the children in the caves for 'several days'.

A spokesman for the Jackson County prosecutor's office said on Saturday he didn't know if she has an attorney.
