Could it be all those rumours about him dating Xenia Deli were just to drum up interest in his their music video?

Whether Justin Bieber and the 25-year-old former Playboy model were ever an item matters not, because he's single now.

The 21-year-old confirmed to Ellen that he is indeed back on the market, and 'ready to mingle'.

In an interview to be broadcast on Tuesday, the host quizzed the popstar on who he was dating right now.

As she did so she scrolled through pictures Justin had uploaded to social media, including a provocative snap of the him and Deli together.

But the Canadian coyly avoided the question, fixing his hat and playing with his hair, and even brought the conversation on a tangent about Ellen's reading glasses before she snapped him back and forced him to answer.

'I’m single ladies, and ready to mingle,' he announced to predictable adolescent shrieks from the audience.

When DeGeneres pointed out that there are a lot of girls that want to mingle with him, he retorted: 'I’m in a place now. I don’t know if I’m ready for a relationship right now.'

The singer last appeared on the show with Madonna, and Bieber agreed with Ellen when she suggested the 57-year-old was flirting with him

'She was right? I felt that,' he agreed, claiming they 'talked a little bit' backstage but didn't really hand out together.

When Ellen insisted he was too old for him - or rather he wasn't too young for her but she was too old for him - Justin mused that the age gap wasn't that off-putting.

Ellen also tried to draw Bieber out on whether his recent single What Do You Mean was written specifically for his rumoured girlfriend and video co-star, but he insisted it was for 'women in general'.

For weeks leading up to the video's release, Bieber had been posting pictures of his celeb friends holding up handwritten placards counting down to the single's release on Friday, including Larry King, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Chris Martin, Hilary Duff, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Big Sean, Mariah Carey, John Leguizamo and Ellen herself.

Deli also featured, and her sign had a little love heart added to the top corner, which added fuel to the rumours the two were more than co-stars after the singer was spotted serenading her in a piano bar the week before.
