Matt Smith is barely recognisable as he morphs into Prince Philip alongside Claire Foy's The Queen for TV drama The Crown
He's well-known for playing a time-travelling doctor.
But Matt Smith is a very different sort of character in his latest project - as he showed when he was spotted on-set in London on Monday.
The handsome screen star, 32, cut a formal figure as he emerged from his trailer dressed as Prince Phillip as part of brand new Netflix TV series, The Crown.

Sense of humour: Clearly feeling a bit cheeky, he poked fun at the role by carrying a Little Miss Princess mug from the Roger Hargreaves' famed Mister Men collection
Wearing a white shirt under a burgundy-coloured tank top, combined with smart trousers, the former sci-fi star certainly looked transformed.
With his hair dyed blonde and scraped back into a retro quiff, he was obviously recreating a 1940s aesthetic.

Earlier in the day he had arrived wearing his own modern-day clothes, which consisted of skinny jeans and a teal-coloured jumper.
He capped the outfit with tan-coloured walking boots and much more relaxed hair.

However, he wasn't the only one who underwent an image overhaul.
Actress Claire Foy, who previously starred as Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall, also stars as a young Queen Elizabeth II in the drama.
First seen arriving on-set with short, cropped hair, she too was barely recognisable as she later emerged with her character hair and make-up in place.

However, she suffered a slightly less regal moment when she dropped her designer sunglasses - smashing them on the floor.
Looking a little annoyed at the gaffe, she picked up the lens - which had fallen out of the frame - and was later seen wearing them, despite a visible crack.

Dinner is served, Ma'am:
According to Netflix, the show ‘tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world - Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street - and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century’.
Each season will focus on a different decade in the Queen's reign, with the first run of episodes focusing on her coronation and her fledgling relationship with Churchill.
The show - the first original UK commission for Netflix - comes from The Queen writer Peter Morgan and Stephen Daldry, who directed Helen Mirren in The Audience.
Since leaving Doctor Who in 2013 Matt has embarked on a number of projects to distance himself from his Gallifreyan alter-ego, including his role as Bully in Ryan Gosling's directorial debut Lost River and a mysterious part in the forthcoming Terminator: Genysis.
All ten episodes of The Crown will premiere in all Netflix territories in 2016.
Taking it in his stride: Matt clearly can't wait to enjoy some down-time away from his role
Stepping up to the acting challenge: Matt finishes a scene and races back to the privacy of his trailer
