'Better take the racing jumpsuits back': Zoe Ball pokes fun at herself as Chris Evans denies claims she has screen-tested for the all-new Top Gear

She moved into first place in the race to present the all-new Top Gear this weekend.

But Chris Evans has revealed Zoe Ball 'hasn't even been' for a screen test for the role yet, let alone excelled at one.

The 49-year-old TV host - who signed a three-year deal to front the all-new version of the show after Jeremy Clarkson's firing from the BBC earlier this year - suggested reports in this weekend's Sunday Mirror were 'hilariously inaccurate'.

'Better take the racing jumpsuits back': Zoe Ball has poked fun at herself after Chris Evans denied reports she has screen-tested for the all-new Top Gear

Writing on his Twitter page on Monday morning, Chris said: 'Hilariously inaccurate story in 2days paper. Re my good friend Zoe Ball excelling in Top Gear screen test. She hasn't even been for one.' (sic)

And re-posting the original tweet, Zoe, 44, hilariously joked that she would have to return all the gear she'd bought to kit herself out in.

She tweeted: 'Ohhh better take all these racing jumpsuits back #shattereddreams.' (sic)

The Sunday Mirror reported Zoe was being lined up to join Chris on the BBC car show after impressing producers with her performance during test filming.

'Zoe looks like a certainty after the screen tests,' a source told the newspaper.

'She was brilliant down on the race track and she's enthusiastic about cars. The chemistry between Zoe and Chris is perfect.'

The mum of two is a regular face on the BBC, and if she had got the gig, would be adding to her long history with the company, which includes Live & Kicking, Top Of The Pops, and Strictly Come Dancing's It Takes Two.

The pair have known each other from early on in their careers, when they appeared separately on Channel 4's Big Breakfast.

Between 1999 and 2001 Zoe was a co-host on The Priory, which was commissioned by Chris Evans's then production company Ginger Productions.

They've also both presented Radio 1 and 2 breakfast shows.

Since it was announced Top Gear would be returning to the BBC, Chris Evans has signed a three-year deal to lead an all-new line-up of presenters.

Former presenter Jeremy Clarkson was sacked for punching producer Oisin Tymon in a row over food in March.

His former co-stars Richard Hammond and James May both left the show and the trio signed a deal to front a motoring show for Amazon Prime customers.

No official announcements have been made about Evans' co-presenters.

MailOnline has contacted a representative for Zoe Ball, and a rep for Top Gear, and is awaiting comment.
