A schoolgirl who made a card for the Queen to celebrate her long reign and invited her to her seventh birthday party received a reply thanking her for her 'kind thought.'

Melissa Poll, six, wrote to Queen Elizabeth II after she wanted to visit Buckingham Palace on a family trip, but did not have time to queue because of a tube strike.

The schoolgirl, from Beswick, Manchester, received a reply to her invite from the Queen, 89, who could not make the party but hoped Melissa could visit Buckingham Palace next year.

Melissa's grandmother Denise Hurst told the Manchester Evening News: 'We passed the gardens at Buckingham Palace and I told her that is where the Queen hosts parties.

'Melissa said "would she like to come to my birthday party?"'

Melissa drew a congratulations card to the Queen with a picture of Her Majesty wearing her crown on the front.

After being unable to visit Buckingham Palace, she posted the card to the monarch and within days she received a reply from the Queen's lady-in-waiting.

The letter read: 'The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for your letter in which you tell Her Majesty about your disappointment at not being able to tour the State Apartments at Buckingham Palace.

'Her Majesty was sorry to hear that you and your grandmother tried twice to see inside the palace and that, for various reasons, you were unlucky.'

It continued: 'Although unable to come to your birthday party, the Queen greatly appreciated your kind thought for her, and I hope you have a lovely time with your family and friends on September 27.

'I am to thank you too for your kind thought in writing about the forthcoming splendid milestone in Her Majesty's reign.'

Last week the Queen became the longest-reigning monarch after serving for 63 years.

Melissa took the letter with her on her first day back at The Church of England School of the Resurrection, in Beswick, Manchester.

Melissa revealed how she was 'delighted' to receive the letter from the Queen.

However her grandmother Denise added: 'She was disappointed she couldn’t make it to the birthday party.'
