Naomi Watts has revealed how she and co-star Matthew McConaughey developed a close relationship through a series of love letters.

The intimate correspondence was in preparation for their roles as husband and wife in the upcoming movie The Sea of Trees.

Speaking to Vogue Australia, the actress revealed: 'We didn't have any time to prep [for the movie] so when Matthew reached out to me via email, I said: 'Do you mind if we write to each other in character?' And he wrote back and said: 'Write at will, Joan.'

Look jazzy in Naomi's jacquard dress by Dries Van Noten

There’s nothing better than a moody blue jacquard dress to get you in the spirit for autumn/winter fashion preparations.

So when we spotted none other than Naomi Watts in a beautiful dress under that description, we couldn’t wait to see that it’s by none other than Dries Van Noten, a Belgian fashion house that has an AW15 collection to die for.

This dress encapsulates the crux of the bohemian, wintry line that played around with different textures and prints, and we’re loving this eye-catching number for an evening shindig in the colder months.

The sad news is that you can’t buy this dress online, so you’ll have to pay a Dries Van Noten store a visit to emulate Naomi’s look.

You can, however, steal her style from our top picks in the edit below. We're loving Ichi's jacquard pencil dress at Asos which is now down to $98. Love it!

'So we proceeded to create this relationship through letters. Some would be just a few lines or something fairly benign, and then other times it would be a long letter about how we failed and how we need to change and accusations of giving up; the same old story, your classic marriage problems.

'Sometimes we would write poetry, sometimes love letters, sometimes stormy letters, sometimes I would leave a voice recording [as Joan] knowing he was going to be shooting in the forest that day. It was great.'

The co-stars threw themselves into their roles for the Gus Van Sant drama, the Australian star told the magazine. 'Our stories are played in flashbacks, and our characters have this tumultuous marriage, so we just had fun with it,' she said.

Watts, 46, stars on the cover of the fashion magazine's October issue, and also discussed wanting to protect her children - Sasha and Samuel, with partner Liev Schreiber - from growing up in a privileged Hollywood bubble.

'Certainly there are things in my life that reflect the fact I've become successful in this industry, I've earned a certain amount of money, but it's not all like that,' she mused.

'And I don't want it to be all like that. I don't want to be driven around in a car all the time. We were in Paris recently and there was a car available for us, but I wanted my kids to walk – I wanted them to see the city!'

'We struggled to create that balance but, knock on wood, it's been okay so far,' the Oscar nominee added. 'I try to be the "normal mum", it's just who I am. It wouldn't be normal for me to operate quote-un-quote like a 'just a movie star'.

Watts is busy promoting two movies at the same time - The Sea of Trees, as well as About Ray, in which she stars alongside Susan Sarandon and Elle Fanning, the latter playing a young woman transitioning to female.

Naomi also discusses the growing number of female-driven films in Hollywood.

'It feels like the woman's voice, overall, is more powerful [these days],' she told Vogue. 'And as I get older ... you have a stronger sense of yourself about what you need and what you want. And so you're able to be more proactive about going out there and making it happen.

'And there are a lot more female directors around and a lot more successful female writers, it feels like it's opening up. [But] it's still not anywhere near equal! I know first-hand, and it's absolutely 100 per cent true.'
