Thirty-seven members of a fraternity will face charges in the death of a Manhattan college student who died during a hazing ritual.

Chun 'Michael' Deng, 19, was at a retreat with the Pi Delta Psi fraternity chapter at a rented home in the Tunkhannock Township in Pennsylvania on the night of his death in December 2013.

The Baruch College student partook in a fraternity hazing ritual called the 'glass ceiling', in which he was blindfolded and had to carry a backpack filled with 30-pounds of sand on his back, police said.

Deng then had to try and get across the frozen yard through a line of his fellow fraternity brothers, who tackled him and, at one point, lifted him up off the ground before dropping him in a move known as 'spearing', according to police.

That's when Deng complained that his head was hurting. He continued participating before he was eventually knocked unconcious and began having trouble breathing, the New York Times reported.

It would be an hour before Deng would be taken by three friends to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital with a severe head injury.

An autopsy later found that he had suffered repeated blunt force trauma to his head, torso and thighs, according to WFMZ-TV

Police said the fraternity brothers delayed in getting Deng help. They first called Andy Meng, their National Fraternity President, who advised them to hide any fraternity items in the house.

Some members left the house while others researched Deng's symptoms online and changed his clothes, authorities said.

The delay in treatment was a contributing factor to Deng's death, according to Monroe County Coroner Dr. Wayne Ross.

On Monday a Grand Jury, which was convened last year, recommended charges of criminal homicide and involuntary manslaughter for Charles Lai, Kenny Kwan, Raymond Lam, Daniel Li, Sheldon Wong.

They also face charges of assault, hindering apprehension and hazing. They could face up to 20 years in prison for the third-degree murder charges.

Steffen Loh, Anthony Phung and Steve Chen were recommended charges of aggravated assault, hinder apprehension, hazing and criminal conspiracy.

David Chen and Brian Choong are facing charges of simple assault, hindering apprehension and criminal conspiracy.

Twenty-seven members of the fraternity have also been charged with hindering apprehension, hazing and conspiracy.

Monroe County District Attorney E. David Christine said the investigation process took time as police had to learn how involved each member present at the retreat was involved in the fatal hazing.

Authorities had to 'make sure people were put in the right category of involvement,' he said.

Christine said his office plans to follow the recommendations of the grand jury.
