Some designers may be coming under fire for using stick-thin models on their runways in New York but some of the most famous plus-size models rallied together in the city to promote diversity in the fashion industry.

Models Ashley Graham, Candice Huffine, Precious Lee, Justine Legault, Sabina Karlsson and Georgia Pratt all turned out to support plus-size retailer Lane Bryant's #PlusIsEqual campaign at Times Square on Monday.

After a much-talked about and somewhat controversial debut in the September issue of Vogue, Lane Bryant's mysterious Plus Is Equal ad campaign was fully unveiled last week - and the models that feature in it are keen to promote it.

'[This is an] amazing, all-inclusive, high-end fashion campaign,' Graham told the Huffington Post.

'Everyone deserves to see themselves being represented equally. #PlusIsEqual is showing that curvy women are accepted, they're represented and being made a priority in the fashion industry,' she added.

'We definitely still have more progress to make, but campaigns like this and #IAmSizeSexy are raising awareness for body diversity and continuing these great conversations.

'I'm thankful to be a part of such an impactful movement.'

The Plus is Equal website explains that, while 67 per cent of US women are size 14 to 34, this size group is grossly underrepresented on billboards, magazines and TV.

'We believe all women should be seen and celebrated equally. It’s time to unite our voices. Because there’s power in numbers and together we can change the equation,' explains the website.

'See what people are saying. Read the facts. Then, add your voice and join us in calling for equal representation.'

The campaign originally drew attention after it was revealed that the only full-figured models in Vogue's 832 page-September issue were in the paid-for ad.

With Lane Bryant's tagline reading 'It's time for change,' many readers responded by tweeting at the magazine to tell editors they could 'do better' when it comes to featuring body diversity.

Earlier this year, the retailer hit back at lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret’s ‘perfect body’ ad with a successful social media campaign titled #ImNoAngel, which saw women of all shapes and sizes posing in lingerie to prove that you don’t need the trim and toned physique of an underwear model in order to be considered beautiful.

Many of the models featured in this latest campaign, including Ashley, Candice Huffine, Precious Victoria Lee, and Justine Legaultand, also appeared in the Cass Bird-lensed images for the I'm No Angel campaign.
