Inside Borneo's 'Zoo from Hell': Shocking pictures show boy kicking frightened monkey's tiny metal cage as a crocodile is fed on dead dogs

Tawau schoolboy kicks a monkey's cage at Yuk Chin Mini Zoo

Yuk Chin Mini Zoo in Tawau, Borneo, has been dubbed the 'Zoo from Hell' due to the 'disgraceful' and heartbreaking conditions that animals are kept in. School children routinely taunt the frightened creatures by kicking their cages (pictured top right) as staff there stand by and do nothing. The animals are held in tiny wire metal cages and many of them are malnourished and seldom fed. The crocodile is held in a concrete compound barely big enough to fit where he languishes motionless for most of the day in the stagnant green pool of its own urine (pictured left). An animal campaigner said the crocodile is occasionally tossed dead dogs and cats to eat. A tree fell on the snake house, allowing the pythons to escape the zoo because none of the staff bothered to try and find them. One snake got into the crocodile compound and was eaten alive.

My victory roll to mark the day Spitfires sent Hitler packing: As Battle of Britain's 75th anniversary is commemorated, ROBERT HARDMAN takes to the skies from Biggin Hill to experience what hero pilots felt

When Spitfires sent Hitler packing at Biggin Hill during WW2's Battle of Britain

For many gallant young men, this may well have been their last glimpse of what they were fighting for 75 years ago this morning, writes ROBERT HARDMAN. Many of the buildings and aircraft here at Biggin Hill airport were not around in 1940 but the surrounding landscape has hardly changed - the farms, the fields, the local golf club. And here I am enjoying the immense privilege of seeing it just as they would have seen it - from the cockpit of a Spitfire. Soaring over the South East of England in arguably the greatest aircraft ever built is surely to taste history in its neatest form, even if my taste for everything else vanishes in a vigorous 360-degree victory roll somewhere above the M25.

The missing skink: Wildlife photographer captures first ever pictures of snake-like lizard with tiny legs that was assumed extinct

Wildlife photographer captures first pictures of skink lizard with tiny legs

The rare reptile, which looks more like a snake, was pictured by a wildlife photographer during a visit to the Masai Mara in Kenya. The skink has four tiny legs (circled in red) that make it a lizard and has a notched tongue rather than the forked tongue of a snake. Sjoerd van Berge Henegouwen, 48, took the pictures after a ranger pointed out what he thought was a snake by the side of the road. Experts believe it is the first photo of a living Western Serpentiform skink.
