The veteran TV star - also known for playing the lead in Only Fools and Horses - was spotted in the Yorkshire market town, where he was wearing the character's trademark overalls and thick-rimmed glasses.

Seeming to be sporting dentures, he looked considerably older than his years - especially with a flash of balding, silver hair.

Stood outside the famous cornershop, he was peered over a table of second-hand goods and was seen chatting to extras.

The site - a local hairdressers in Balby - was transformed into Arkwright’s shop overnight on Sunday and will now see the likes of Johnny Vegas on-set.

Fellow TV actor Tim Healy was also seen alongside Jason, wearing blue overalls and cutting an ageing figure.

While exterior filming is taking place at the salon, interior shots will be filmed in Teddington Studios, Middlesex later in the year.

It comes after fans were forced to endure a long wait to hear if a second season had been commissioned by TV bosses.

First revived on Boxing Day 2013, the original Christmas special was the most-watched show of that day, returning to screens after almost 30 years.

Some viewers felt that it was a fitting tribute to the late star of the show, Ronnie Barker, who died of heart failure in 2005 aged 76.

But others questions whether the show's moment had passed.

But there was no sign of fatigue in the show's leading man, who was on form.

Inbetween takes, the actor was seen wearing a battered fireman's helmet and cracking jokes with crew, who were setting up the scenes.

Adding a modern twist, Healy's character was seen puffing on an e-cigarette.

Also returning to the show is Nina Wadia, who stars as town gossip Mrs Hussein, plus Lynda Baron as Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, Stephanie Cole as The Black Widow and Maggie Ollerenshaw as the object of Granville’s affections, Mavis.

The latter three were original cast-members.

Executive Producer Gareth Edwards says: 'It‘s wonderful to be returning with our fantastic cast to Granville’s daft, warm and life-affirming world, full of the kind of characters and situations that could only come from the remarkable mind of Roy Clarke.'
