Arnold Schwarzenegger is named as new host of Celebrity Apprentice

  • The former California Governor will fill the shoes left empty with the departure of Donald Trump, NBC announced Monday
  • NBC, which airs Celebrity Apprentice, cut ties with Trump in June after his controversial remarks about Mexicans

Actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has been named the new host of Celebrity Apprentice.

NBC has announced the Governator will step in to fill the shoes left empty after Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump was dumped from the gig following controversial statements he made about Mexican immigrants early this summer.

Trump made the show a success, with first regular folks and then celebrities competing in business-related tasks. In seven seasons, NBC said 'The Celebrity Apprentice' has helped raise more than $15 million for charity.

As the news broke to widespread cheers and congratulations across social media, Schwarzenegger responded on Twitter:

'Wow. I'm blown away and honored by all your tweets. I can't wait to bring my experience to the board room & raise millions for charity,' he wrote.

There's no word on whether Schwarzenegger will replace Trump's 'you're fired' catchphrase with his own 'you're terminated.'

NBC cut ties with Trump in June days after he made critical comments about Mexican immigrants and NBC canceled its airing of the Miss USA pageant, which Univision also decided not to air.

NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said Trump would never return as host of 'The Celebrity Apprentice.

Greenblatt said at the time that the show will not be back immediately, but would soon return with a new host.

It appears the Terminator answered the call.

Greenblatt said he enjoyed working with Trump when the network was still in business with him.

'He is a lovely guy. He was very much a collaborator and worked with us closely on 'Celebrity Apprentice' and, you know, there's a really effusive great guy. We weren't in any sort of adversarial position.'

According to Greenblatt, a number of celebrities had expressed interest in taking on Trump's role.

Martha Stewart hosted her own version of 'The Celebrity Apprentice' for one season in 2005.

Leeza Gibbons was named the winner of the most recent 7th edition of 'The Celebrity Apprentice.'
