Beloved British nanny Mary Poppins is to take to the silver screens in a brand new adventure from Disney.

The character immortalised by Julie Andrews in the original film will appear in a new musical being developed, which will be more than simply a remake.

The new movie will take inspiration from all of the books in PL Travers' eight-part series, while the original film was primarily based on the first installment.

Set in post-depression London, around 20 years after the original, it will follow Poppins as she has more adventures with the Banks family, but will not be made as a sequel the 1964 classic, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The new movie is to be directed by Rob Marshall and produced by John DeLuca and Marc Platt, who made family favourite Into The Woods together.

The script is to be written by Life of Pi screenwriter David Magee and the film will feature original songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, famous for  hits in Hairspray and Smash.

It has earned the support of co-composer Richard Sherman, who wrote the original film’s famous songs such as Chim Chim Cher-ee and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious with his late brother, Robert.

But the idea of a new version of Mary Poppins has its opponents too, with many taking to social media to voice their anger.

One person, posting as Zoe, said on Twitter: 'I firmly believe this is the worst thing Disney could do. Leave Mary Poppins alone!'

Someone posting as Megan wrote: 'Wait what.. why are they remaking Mary Poppins? noo you can't do that I like the old Mary Poppins.'

Another person simply wrote: 'Leave. Mary Poppins. The HELL. Alone.'

Disney first adapted the character in the 1964 musical Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews in the eponymous role singing songs such as the now classic A Spoonful of Sugar and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

The original film's creation was the central focus of Disney's 2013 drama Saving Mr Banks starring Emma Thompson as Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney.

In the film it was revealed that Mary Poppins, a symbol of the quintessential English nanny, is based off Travers' experiences growing up with an alcoholic father in the Queensland outback.
