England record goalscorer Wayne Rooney welcomed BBC presenter Gary Lineker into his home to meet his family as part of a new documentary.

The 29-year-old netted his 50th international goal as England defeated Switzerland 2-0 in their Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton's long-standing scoring record for his country.

The Manchester United captain is now the subject of a one-off 60 minute film, Rooney – The Man Behind The Goals, that sees cameras go behind the scenes to deliver a personal portrait of the player.

'I have been approached many times about allowing the cameras into our lives and always said no. But now seems the right time,' said Rooney.

'This film is not just about my goals, it's about the people I care about the most, my team mates, the people closest to me but most importantly, my family.'

Lineker, who scored 48 goals himself during his England career, met up with Rooney, wife Coleen and their two sons Klay and Kai enjoyed the time he spent in the family's household.

Lineker said: 'I think that our film will allow the public to discover the real Wayne Rooney. It's been great spending time with him and the whole Rooney family.

'Remember also that Wayne is still only 29, he could push this record considerably higher yet,' he added.

The film, which will be aired on BBC 1 at 9pm on Monday October 5 follows Rooney's journey from a Merseyside council estate to becoming a genuine world class player while also revealing what he is like off the pitch.

The impressive cast of interviewees also include Sven Goran Eriksson, David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovich, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Louis van Gaal, Jamie Carragher, Roy Hodgson, David Moyes and the previous record holder, Sir Bobby Charlton.
