Liza Minnelli tour cancelled after tickets costing up to £300 remained unsold

  • Around half of the tickets for shows throughout Britain hadn't been bought
  • That included performances in arenas in London, Sheffield and Glasgow
  • Concerts now cancelled, with source saying it's to save her embarrassment
  • Believed £40,000 was spent on promoting the shows in which star was to be interviewed by Sir Bruce Forsyth

She was once one of Hollywood’s biggest draws.

But now Liza Minnelli, 69, has been forced to pull out of three planned UK shows because ticket sales were so poor.

With the theatres in London, Sheffield and Glasgow set to be half empty, the appearances by the Oscar-winner were pulled in order to save her embarrassment, a source has said.

It is believed that £40,000 was spent on promoting the shows in which Miss Minnelli was to be interviewed about her life and career by Sir Bruce Forsyth, 87.

But still too few tickets were sold to make the shows viable. Those who have already bought tickets, which cost up to £300, will be given a full refund.

The Cabaret star, who is the daughter of Judy Garland, was set to perform at the London Palladium on Sunday and in Sheffield’s City Hall and Glasgow’s SECC Clyde Auditorium next week.

The events were organised by promoter Rocco Buonvino who has hosted similar shows with stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone.

Miss Minnelli is one of a handful of stars to have won the so-called Egot - an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. In March, she was admitted to rehab for treatment of substance abuse.

Her representatives said in a statement that she pulled out ‘because of the promoter’s failure to pay. Due to current economics and unusually high ticket prices, the producer was unable to secure the promised funds.

'For months Liza has been preparing for these shows and she was devastated to hear of this unfortunate news. She has always thought of London a second home and will miss seeing her friends and devoted fans.’

However, these claims have been strongly denied by Mr Buonvino.
