A teenage father-to-be has been found hanged after getting his 15-year-old girlfriend pregnant.

Paul Briggs, 17, was shocked when his schoolgirl sweetheart, Kyra Applin, discovered she was having his baby but the pair told their families they wanted the pregnancy to go ahead.

The young pair discovered they were having a little girl - due the day before Paul's 18th birthday in April - and were choosing names.

However, Kyra found Paul dead in her bedroom at her family home in the village of Ferndale, Rhondda, South Wales.

Tearful Kyra said: "I don't know why he did it - we were both really looking forward to the baby.

"I had a scan on December 19 and we found out we were having a girl. We held hands, we were both really excited. We even talked about names.

"I liked Michaela but Paul wanted Mia, so that's what I'm going to call her."

Paul and Kyra had been going out together for three months when she discovered she was pregnant last July.

Soccer-mad Paul lived with his grandparents Tom and Patricia Jones in the village of Ynyshir, Rhondda.

His mother Angela, 45, who lives on Anglesey, North Wales, said: "Paul was a loving son who was excited about becoming a dad.

"After the scan he told me: 'I can't wait mum. I could see the baby's heart beating on the monitor'. Paul was a mummy's boy who would tell me he loved me in a room full of people."

Mother-of-three Angela said she believes her son - known by his nickname Briggsy - did not mean to kill himself.

She said: "He had everything to live for. Can you count how many stars there are in the sky? That's how much I'm going to miss him."

His grandfather Tom, 78, said: "My wife and I brought him up as our own. He was a lovely boy. He was so full of life and would do anything for anybody."

An internet tribute to Paul has been set up on the internet social networking site Bebo.

One message said: "He was the funniest boy you could ever meet. He loved to party and always lived life to the fullest. We all loved him so much and always will."

South Wales Police were today investigating the tragedy but say there were no suspicious circumstances.

A post mortem examination has been held and an inquest will be opened.
