Welcome to the charred side: Burned spaceship smoulders alongside Stormtrooper-littered lake as first images emerge of Star Wars cast filming Rogue One

Earlier this year, sci-fi fans got a surprise when it was announced Star Wars: Rogue One would be set shortly before the events of A New Hope.

And now Disney's first stand-alone film has started shooting for the spin-off in London, with a burned starship and a Stormtrooper-covered lake playing an integral role.

Filming at Pinewood studios, members of the case - including Felicity Jones, Donnie Yen, Jonathan Aris and Diego Luna -  can all be seen in costume.

Standing in traditional Rebel combat fatigues - similar to the type used in Return Of The Jedi's Endor scenes - the mysterious protagonists can be seen inspecting the wrecked space ship.

With its prow and shattered remains buried in a deep trench on the desert set, the craft presumably has some connection to the floating Stormtrooper corpses in a nearby lake.

Obviously keen to investigate the fate that has befallen the star cruising craft, the Rebel Commandos can be seen inspecting flaming debris.

Dishevelled but rebelling: During a break from filming Felicity was seen having minor alterations to her make-up and costume made; the Theory Of Everything actress is set to star in the film as one of the key members of the Rogue One Rebel Alliance team

Due out in December 2016, the film is believed to be centred around regular troops from the disillusioned forces of the rebel alliance attempting to bring down the Death Star.

Earlier this year the first official photograph from the new stand-alone series, re-titled Star Wars Stories movies, revealed the main cast as well as the plot line - possibly the daring raid referenced in the briefing scene on Yavin IV in A New Hope.

In August, Disney announced more sketchy details of the film at its D23 expo, in California.

Lucas film president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement: 'Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe.

'It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective, while maintaining that essential feel that fans have come to know.'

Meanwhile the first official line-up of the movie was revealed, and included the likes of: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen.

Speaking about the film's director, Gareth Edwards, Kennedy said: 'Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for Rogue One.'

But, even before Star Wars fans can begin getting excited about Edwards' new take on the Sci-Fi epic, they will get to see the first of three new saga films - following on from the original Star Wars trilogy.

Star War: The Force Awakens will see the Empire try to rise again in the form of nefarious First Order, and stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam driver, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac.

The film is due to hit cinemas in December, with a UK release date touted for December 17.
